3 Neville Chamberlain (1869–1940), Chancellor of the Exchequer 1923–4; Minister of Health 1924–9 under Baldwin; Chancellor of the Exchequer in the National Government under MacDonald 1931–5 and again under Baldwin 1935–7; Prime Minister National Government May 1937–May 1940.
4 On 5 Dec. 1937, Japanese troops advancing on Nanking in China bombed Wuhu on the Yangtse river, damaging HMS Ladybird and two British-owned river steamers.
5 Caroline Paget (1913–76), Diana’s niece. Eldest daughter of the Marquess and Marchioness of Anglesey. She married Michael Duff in 1949.
6 Philip Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Earl of Swinton (1884–1972). Born Philip Lloyd-Graeme, he changed his name in 1924. Conservative MP 1918–35; President of the Board of Trade 1921–31; Colonial Secretary 1932–5; Minister for Air 1935–8; Resident Minister in West Africa 1942–4.
7 Thomas Inskip, 1st Viscount Caldecote (1876–1947). Lawyer and statesman. Attorney-General 1928–9 and 1932–44; Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence 1936–8. In Sept. 1939 he was briefly Lord Chancellor and from 1940 to 1946 Lord Chief Justice.
8 On 4 Feb. Hitler became Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht (German Armed Forces).
9 Joachim von Ribbentrop (1893–1946). German politician, joined the Nazi Party in 1932 and in 1933 became foreign policy adviser to Hitler. From 1936–8 he was German Ambassador in England, returned to Germany as Foreign Minister and negotiated the Soviet–German Non-Aggression Pact of 1939. He was captured after the war, tried at Nuremberg in 1946, found guilty and executed.
10 Alfred Chatfield, 1st Baron Chatfield (1873–1967). Admiral of the Fleet 1935; First Sea Lord 1933–Aug. 1938; Minister for Co-ordination of Defence 1939–40.
11 Benito Mussolini (1883–1945) ruled Italy as a Fascist dictator 1922–43. He was deposed in July 1943, arrested, rescued by the Germans and set up a Fascist state in northern Italy. On 27 April 1945 he and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were captured by Italian partisans and executed the next day.
12 Count Dino Grandi (1895–1988). Italian Foreign Minister 1929–32; Italian Ambassador to London 1932–8.
13 Sir Nevile Henderson (1882–1942), diplomat. Ambassador to Berlin 1937–9. Supporter of Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement.
14 Yvon Delbos (1885–1956), French Foreign Minister 1936–8.
15 Sir Eric Phipps (1875–1945), Ambassador to Berlin 1933–7 and to Paris 1937–9.
16 Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron (1910–90), zoologist. From 1939–45 he served in MI5 as head of counter-sabotage and became a bomb disposal expert. In 1933 he married Barbara Hutchinson. They were divorced in 1945 and the following year he married Tess Mayor (d. 1990).
17 Henry Rainald ‘George’ Gage, 6th Viscount Gage (1895–1982), married first, in 1931, Hon. Imogen ‘Mogs’ Grenfell (d. 1969), second, in 1971, Diana Campbell-Gray (d. 1992).
18 Sir Geoffrey Shakespeare (1893–1980), Liberal National politician. Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty 1937–40.
19 On 12 March 1938, German troops marched into Austria and on 13 March Hitler announced the legislation on the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria into the German Reich.
20 Geoffrey Dawson [previously Robinson] (1874–1944), editor of The Times 1912–19 and 1923–41.
21 Philip Henry Kerr, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882–1940).
