Bargaining Chip

The Russian special ops team was hitting one brick wall after another in their protracted search for Johnny’s home airport. Hoping to find his point of origin, they pored over the names of all inbound passengers who landed at the Newark airport during the ten-day period prior to Johnny’s departure from Newark to Moscow but came up empty-handed. This was because Johnny had been transported by limo from the Pentagon to Newark after General Reed selected him for the Moscow mission.

Additionally, comparing the Newark airport’s inbound and outbound passenger lists had produced many more matches than they’d anticipated, but Johnny’s fake name wasn’t one of them. Not only did he travel by car to Newark on his way to Moscow, but on his return trip, he was flown on a military transport from Hahn Air Base in Germany to Andrews Air Force Base in Virginia for a debriefing. Following his debriefing, he was driven to Washington Dulles Airport where he returned to Moline under his real name. The Russians lost his trail after he traveled from Moscow to Frankfurt because he and the rest of his team were driven from Frankfurt to Hahn Air Base.

This caused the Russians to suspect that Newark might be his home airport, so they focused on searching driver’s license records for New Jersey and New York. The buildings where these records were housed were such relatively soft targets that they could come and go as they pleased after business hours without setting off any alarms. But after hitting yet another brick wall, they regrouped and formulated a new strategy.

On New Year’s Day of 1975, in the wee hours of the morning, the Russian special ops team pulled off a daring bank heist with military precision. But they weren’t after cash or jewels. Rather, they were after the magnetic tapes created by the bank’s mainframe computer. Cases upon cases of tapes covering transactions within the past six months for all accounts at the bank were stolen.

Extracting all the transactional data for the targeted Pentagon account took the Russians a great deal of time and effort. It turned out to be a rather large account with plane ticket purchases made almost on a daily basis for military brass and contractors around the world. In the ten-day period leading up to Johnny’s departure from Newark, seventeen airline tickets were purchased for travel within the US including Johnny’s ticket from Moline to Washington Dulles. However, the special ops team didn’t flag it because it wasn’t for travel to Newark. There were only three flights directly to Newark, but they proved to be dead ends.

The full focus of their search was shifted to their undercover contact inside the Pentagon. This individual was posing as a building maintenance supervisor, which gave him access to most areas of the facility. He’d been given a copy of Johnny’s fake passport along with the travel dates from Newark to Moscow. Since Johnny’s Moscow trip had been compliments of the US Army, that was the area of the Pentagon where the spy concentrated his intelligence gathering.
