Five minutes later, Marcus was seated in the chair inside the dome house, his wrists handcuffed behind his back, his ankles handcuffed together through a cross beam at the back of the chair. Gene had set the flashlight on the table—aimed up at the ceiling where it would scatter light down from above. He had Marcus’s Glock in his suit-coat pocket.

Gene stood in front of Marcus—so he had to look up at Gene to speak.

For his part, Marcus was playing the good soldier. Since his initial question, he hadn’t spoken a word—just stared at Gene defiantly. Gene guessed he was trying for “stony,” but it came off more as “sulky.” That, and quite understandably, pissed off.

Gene had called for Gabby, who was now in the doorway, hanging back—clearly unsure of her role. Maybe unsure of her allegiances. Her Henley shirt was slicked gray with muck, her hair a wild corona around her head. Gene could only imagine how he looked.

Probably like Obi-Wan Kenobi turned to the dark side, then dragged through Yoda’s swamp.

Gene said to Marcus, “I’m going to keep this as simple as I can. I don’t expect you to respond. Not until the end. But I do expect you to listen. What I’m going to tell you will sound impossible. But as you listen, I want you to ask yourself, What would Gene stand to gain by making this all up? And then, after I’ve said my piece, I’ll need to know whether you’re open to seeing some proof of my claims. There is hard evidence; we just need to go get it.”

Gene was thinking especially of the fairies.

“Or, if you’re going to stick your head in the sand and deny reality, we’re going to have a real problem. And no, I’m not fucking around. Do you understand, Marcus?”

As Gene expected, Marcus didn’t respond—just kept on glaring, eyes burning with contempt. So, Gene began from the beginning. He told Marcus everything, starting from the night he’d watched Katie disappear in the clearing, all the way through to the White Watcher, and everything in between—including what Gabby had told him about Katie and Marigold, which he presented as intel from credible sources. Gene finished by connecting the dots. He explained the risk to the girls’ lives, should their abilities be discovered by the government. And he explained why he’d assaulted and handcuffed Marcus—in the event that Marcus disagreed about that risk or didn’t care. Finally, Gene let him know in no uncertain terms that he needed Marcus to pick a side, here and now.

He was either going to open his mind to the reality that to protect the girls, he would be sworn to secrecy forever, or he was going to stay here in handcuffs for the foreseeable future.

Through it all, Gene monitored Marcus’s reactions. Watched the microaggressions rise and fall: The twitch of his lip. The crease between his eyebrows. The smug, tight-lipped smile and the condescending glare.

Gene also monitored Gabby’s reactions, out of the corner of one eye.
