CHAPTER SEVEN

ADAM GLANCED DOWN the long conference table where the members of Mr. Moreira’s treatment team had gathered to talk about timetables and who would be in charge of planning each segment of their patient’s journey back to health. He wasn’t exactly sure what he thought about Natália attending this particular meeting, but Sebastian wanted her here. She’d spoken with their patient on more than one occasion and since they had all agreed that she would help keep him motivated, Adam couldn’t very well ask to have her taken off the team. Not without answering some very difficult questions.

Questions that could put him in an awkward situation to say the very least.

As if sensing his eyes were on her, Natália picked that very moment to glance over and catch him staring. Her brows went up, then her attention shifted to the current speaker: Sebastian, who was talking about the chemo regimen he hoped to begin this week. They’d gotten the okay from the insurance companies and, thanks to Natália, from the patient himself. The only thing left to do was set the exact date.

“So what does everyone think about next Wednesday for starting dose one of the methotrexate?”

The treatment regimen was the one most often used for this type of osteosarcoma.

“Sounds good,” Adam said. “Standard protocol?”

“Yes, unless we’re not getting the results we want. If that happens, we’ll re-evaluate.”

A hand went up from farther down the table. Natália was asking for the floor.

Sebastian nodded in her direction. “You have something to add?”

“I’m just curious as to what ‘standard protocol’ means in this case.”

“It means that there is a narrow window, and we want to follow what has worked for the largest segment of patients.”

“He’s worried about being sick and not appearing himself to the people he loves. Especially his daughter. Since she’s a nurse, he knows he won’t be able to hide much from her.”

Leave it to Natália to think of something other than objective facts. But it made sense. Her area of expertise wasn’t as cut and dried as oncology and orthopedics were. On the rare occasions he’d ventured down into NICU, he’d witnessed her tenderly holding those babies as if she could love them back to health. And maybe she could. It didn’t work that way in his specialty. Cuddling his patients wouldn’t mend broken bones. It certainly wouldn’t cure Mr. Moreira’s osteosarcoma. Or could it? Hadn’t Sebastian told him he had seen miraculous recoveries in patients who—according to every statistic—should be dead?

And the way Natália had coaxed their patient to give medicine a chance... She’d spoken from the heart and used her own experience to give the man a sense of hope. Without her, this treatment team probably wouldn’t be meeting to discuss treatment at all, but rather issuing discharge papers.

His eyes caught hers again as Sebastian asked, “What exactly is he afraid of? Losing his hair?”

“He’s afraid of not being seen as the man he perceives himself to be.”

“He’s not going to be that man.
