Chapter Fifteen

JUAN

When I woke up this morning I saw that I had several missed calls from Rich and Uncle Renzo. I’d gone to bed early the night before after I listened to my mother complain about Rich and feel sorry for herself once again about Carlos. It seemed as though anytime Carlos’ name came up her whole world came to an end. The damsel in distress move was getting old and definitely wearing thin on my nerves. Sometimes I wished that I didn’t always have to worry about her, especially since I needed to focus on my life for a change. It was time for me to start concentrating on me.

It’s crazy how when you get older, the roles of parent and child eventually reverse. I’d gone from needing my mother and Rich to them needing me. I didn’t minhelping out Rich every now and then, but the stunt he’d pulled the day before pissed me off. I knew that I had to follow Jade because I couldn’t risk her exposing my mother, but I didn’t sign up for being a fucking accessory to murder. Shit, I wasn’t a killer. All I wanted to do was make money, hit a couple of chicks, and pop bottles from time to time. Street life is all I’d ever known, but I’d been lucky enough to make it without having to really prove my street cred. Carlos and Rich had paved the way for me in that sense. Selling drugs was a far stretch from killing muthafuckas and I needed it to stay that way.

As soon as I was about to get out of bed, my phone rang. I sighed when I looked at the caller ID.

“What’s up, Rich?” I answered in a dry tone.

“Man, you duckin’ my calls now. I been callin’ your ass all night.”

“What do you want? I ain’t got time to argue with you right now.”

“Look, I’m still your father. I’m not one of your little bitches, so be careful when you’re talkin’ to me.”

“Well, stop actin’ like one.”

“Muthafucka, I needed you last night and you wouldn’t answer the phone, but as usual I handled everythin’. There’s no need for you to try to duck me! I took care of everythin’ without you, slim.”

“Look, I’m a grown-ass man. There’s no need for me to try and duck your fucking calls. If I don’t want to talk to you then I’ll say just that. If I don’t answer then that means I’m busy.”

“Busy doin’ what? Fuckin’ some broad. That shit could’ve waited,” Rich shot back.

“No, I was busy comforting your wife all night. It seems that’s been my job for as long as I can remember. Some shit you should be doing!”

“Juan, you know what…”

The phone went dead because I hung up on his selfish-ass. Little did that nigga know, he wouldn’t have to take care of everything if it wasn’t for me. I could’ve easily reminded him of that shit, since he’d had a memory loss, but just wasn’t in the mood to deal with it.
