Developing a great story

A great story takes you on a journey and springs from a universal truth—something that can be expressed within a culture, but transcends time and place to be known by the audience to be true. Your challenge is to come up with the intricate detail and original ideas that make a story great.

The audience will connect at a deeper level with a story if it contains insights into real-life challenges. You want audiences to make use of their own emotions, and so the story should move them from happiness and joy to sadness and despair and back up again, exploring their own response to the situations on screen. Audiences want to empathize with the characters; as they watch, they see themselves replayed on the screen. The way the characters interact can strike a chord with the audience as they discover themselves within the story, faced by obstacle after obstacle that they must overcome in order to move the story to a satisfactory conclusion. How would they react if placed under the same duress as the characters in the story? How would they deal with each emotional situation and its dangers? Would they cope as well or would they opt for an easy route?
