FOUR HOURS LATER KATE was sitting in his office hoping her expression reinforced the fact that she wasn’t ready to forgive him.

“Okay,” she said. “Tell me the full story. This better be good.”

“We’ve got movement,” he replied. “Whatever O’Hare sent to France is still there, we’re almost one hundred percent sure of that.” His tone revealed the excitement of the chase hotting up.

“How do you figure that?”

“Here’s the story so far. Fenaux has a holiday home in Normandy where he spends any weekend he can out of Paris. That’s how he got the tip-off, from a former colleague, who lives in Pont de l’Arche.”

“Is that in Normandy?”

“Close enough. It’s on the way from Paris. So, a builder’s merchant in Pont de l’Arche passed information to Fenaux’s mate.”

“What information?”

“The informant owns a DIY business. Fenaux’s mate is ex-RG, you know like Special Branch here. He told him about an Irishman they used to keep an eye on. This guy lives fifteen kilometers from the village. He’s married to a French woman and works for the Forestry Service in Normandy.”

“Has he any form here?”

“His name is John Strain and came to our attention in the early seventies when he was suspected of involvement in armed robberies for the Provos. He dropped off our radar until we got a trace request from the Fenaux back in the eighties.”

“Was there any specific reason for enquiring back then?”

“Just Fenaux being Fenaux,” Mac explained. “He wanted to establish the background of any Irish living in his district.”

“So he kept an eye on the Paddy.”

“You know the old saying listen to the river and you’re going to catch a fish. Get to know their patterns and if they change, find out why. Strain bought three packets of welding rods earlier this week.”

“So what?” Kate asked.

“He works in the forestry as a laborer. He has no use for welding rods?”

“Maybe he was buying them for someone else.”

Kate wondered had her weekend been canceled for a wild goose chase and was also curious about where she fitted into the picture Mac was painting.

“What did Fenaux do?” she asked.

“He arranged 24-hour surveillance on Strain. Had his home phone and mobile tapped, intercepted his internet, and generally threw everything at him,” Mac explained.

“Did they come up with anything?”

“They figured they had everything covered until one of Fenaux’s crew saw a postman doing his rounds and realized they hadn’t included ordinary mail in the intercept warrant. They went back to the judge and corrected it the same day. Three days later this was intercepted.”

He handed her an A4 page. It was a copy of a postcard seemingly sent from Germany signed by Nutser. To the casual reader, it looked like any other postcard.

“Buddy,

Passing your way soon. Our pal will meet ya for a coffee at the Porky Pig place. Here, did ya do our lucky lotto numbers lately? In case ya forgot them here they are 14 12 25 09 10 30. See ye soon brother.

Nutser”

It was evident that the writer intended any unwelcome eyes viewing the card to believe that Nutser and Strain were friends.
