Twenty-Nine

Yuri woke early. He turned in bed and could see through the small gap at the bottom of the window curtains—it was still dark outside. He felt the warmth of her body and rubbed his hand on the small of her naked back. She moaned softly and reached for him. He grew hard in her hand. She turned to him and ran her hands along his legs as she turned on her back. Yuri felt more than lust for her. She was the first woman he had wanted to be with—even when not having sex. They made love on the hotel bed and he was slow and passionate. When they finished, they held each other, and she curled against him, stroking his chest lightly with her nails. They did not speak

Yuri kissed the top of her head and got out of bed. He went into the bathroom, took a short shower, and got dressed. She was asleep as he left the room.

He stood outside for a moment looking at the parking lot and watching as the street started to come to life with cars and trucks moving about. A coffee shop across the street had its Open sign turned on, and he was hungry and wanted a cup of coffee. He studied the cars in the hotel parking lot and all had been in the same place since he arrived except for a harmless-looking minivan. He knocked on the door to the next room and one of his men opened it right away. Yuri looked in and Matt appeared to be sleeping. Yuri nodded to his man, turned around, and headed across the street.

He walked into the small restaurant and smelled the coffee and bacon. An older man behind the cash register smiled and told him to have a seat anywhere he liked. He chose a booth at the window so he could watch the hotel across the street.

A young, fresh-looking waitress brought him a glass of water and asked if he wanted coffee. He said yes, he would like coffee with cream. He didn’t see any danger in her eyes at the sound of his accent. He didn’t like to make small talk with strangers. He didn’t smile often, and his dark looks and deep eyes didn’t welcome chitchat in public. He learned to use body language to ensure that strangers left him alone.

The waitress returned to his table with the coffee and cream, and waited patiently for his food order: eggs over-easy, bacon and wheat toast. She smiled and walked away.

He sipped his coffee and stared out the window. In the light of the early dawn, he could watch the street and the hotel parking lot. It was at times like this when Yuri missed having a cigarette, but it was illegal to smoke inside any public establishment in California. He didn’t like to draw attention to himself, so he had quit smoking—but there were times when the cravings still came to him.

He thought about the day ahead as he waited for his breakfast.
