At the end of March of 1966, the doctors concluded the flap had taken. They decided to take off the orthopedic devices and the immense cast that held the arm next to the chin. From that point on, the surgeries went as well as one could expect, considering that the goal was to distribute the new matter as well as possible.

We took advantage of this improvement, and Eligia was able to start walking again after so many months. During our short excursions through the corridors, the groups of big noses looked at us horrified as they waited nervously for their turn under the scalpel. When Eligia gained more strength, I decided to make a visit we had promised a while ago. One Sunday morning, very early, we went to the clinic’s chapel, a modern space with joyful stained-glass windows and bright, stylized altars. We sat in a far corner where the officiant wouldn’t be able to see us. There were few parishioners. All nurses or maids. The same priest who had come to Eligia’s room was leading the service with the same intensity I remembered; he glanced at the girls with a look of astonishment and delivered his sermon.
