I’m shaken awake what feels like ten minutes later; groggy and not rested at all, I peel my eyes open, staring up at pale green eyes looking down at me. Artie’s frowning face stares as I blink a few times, trying to get the sleep to disappear from them. Looking around, I notice it’s still dark, so who knows? Maybe I’ll be able to go back to sleep. The look in Arties’ eyes, though, tells me that is not the case, and I sigh, resigning myself to the fact this day is going to suck worse than normal.

“What’s up?” I ask, my voice hoarse with lack of sleep.

“We need to get moving sooner than we thought. There seems to be a lot of movement outside, so we don’t want to stay around any longer than necessary in case more demons check houses again,” Artie whispers, a hint of worry coating every word.

“Fuck…” I groan, forcing myself up. “Okay, let’s get going.” I look at the three on watch, my lips thinning at the idea of making the journey in the dark. “Oliver, since we still need to get those supplies, I need you to be up in the front of the group as we go,” I say as I’m pulling my shoes on. Looking at my watch, that I’m honestly surprised still works with how battered to hell it is, I notice it’s 3:16 in the motherfucking morning and let out another groan.

Really? Only what, four or five hours of sleep after a whole fucking day of walking? Fuck me for thinking I was actually going to get some good sleep. I’m fucking delusional. Everyone is moving sluggishly as they are woken and told we need to move.

“Olivia, I’m putting you in charge of Imani, and Mrs. SJ, you take Joey. I want you guys in the middle of the group, since Joey is still healing. Everyone else, let’s split between the front and back,” I say in a hurry, since I’m not sure how close the things outside are to us. We’ll have to move slowly so we can keep our ears open while we move. They could be anywhere.

“I can take care of myself. I’m fine,” Joey insists from the bed he’s still laying in. Groaning, I don’t bother answering his protest. I had hoped that he was still asleep and we could just carry him out of here. His bruises are fading to more of a yucky greenish yellow color and we’ve wrapped his arm with a makeshift sling, but he’s still in a lot of pain every time he moves. I might have to give him the narcotic… I don’t like it, but if he get’s to loud while we’re walking we’re going to have to. Once we get to the house, we can be slightly louder since we’re further part from where people are. Getting there, though, we have to avoid all the dangers we can.

“I know you can, but you
