Iâm shaken awake what feels like ten minutes later; groggy and not rested at all, I peel my eyes open, staring up at pale green eyes looking down at me. Artieâs frowning face stares as I blink a few times, trying to get the sleep to disappear from them. Looking around, I notice itâs still dark, so who knows? Maybe Iâll be able to go back to sleep. The look in Artiesâ eyes, though, tells me that is not the case, and I sigh, resigning myself to the fact this day is going to suck worse than normal.
âWhatâs up?â I ask, my voice hoarse with lack of sleep.
âWe need to get moving sooner than we thought. There seems to be a lot of movement outside, so we donât want to stay around any longer than necessary in case more demons check houses again,â Artie whispers, a hint of worry coating every word.
âFuckâ¦â I groan, forcing myself up. âOkay, letâs get going.â I look at the three on watch, my lips thinning at the idea of making the journey in the dark. âOliver, since we still need to get those supplies, I need you to be up in the front of the group as we go,â I say as Iâm pulling my shoes on. Looking at my watch, that Iâm honestly surprised still works with how battered to hell it is, I notice itâs 3:16 in the motherfucking morning and let out another groan.
Really? Only what, four or five hours of sleep after a whole fucking day of walking? Fuck me for thinking I was actually going to get some good sleep. Iâm fucking delusional. Everyone is moving sluggishly as they are woken and told we need to move.
âOlivia, Iâm putting you in charge of Imani, and Mrs. SJ, you take Joey. I want you guys in the middle of the group, since Joey is still healing. Everyone else, letâs split between the front and back,â I say in a hurry, since Iâm not sure how close the things outside are to us. Weâll have to move slowly so we can keep our ears open while we move. They could be anywhere.
âI can take care of myself. Iâm fine,â Joey insists from the bed heâs still laying in. Groaning, I donât bother answering his protest. I had hoped that he was still asleep and we could just carry him out of here. His bruises are fading to more of a yucky greenish yellow color and weâve wrapped his arm with a makeshift sling, but heâs still in a lot of pain every time he moves. I might have to give him the narcotic⦠I donât like it, but if he getâs to loud while weâre walking weâre going to have to. Once we get to the house, we can be slightly louder since weâre further part from where people are. Getting there, though, we have to avoid all the dangers we can.
âI know you can, but you
