Chapter Thirty-eight
DONALD PARKS OPENED his eyes slowly to blurred fluorescent lights. His head ached, as did his ribs and right leg. His mouth was dry and pasty. He was hooked to an I.V. Other beeping machines were at the head of his bed. A television could be heard from the other side of the room.
He recognized that he must be inside a hospital room, but he wasnât certain why. His knuckles were bruised and swollen. Now that he was awake, pain radiated throughout his body.
Parks closed his eyes and tried to remember. It hurt to think. A redheaded nurse came into his room to check his I.V. She was short, plump, and wore âHello Kittyâ scrubs. Her nametag identified her as Sara. Her overly cheerful persona made his head hurt even worse.
âWhy am I here?â he asked weakly. âI guess, more importantly, how did I get here?
âOh, youâre finally awake. Youâve been here for a couple of days. To be honest, I was getting quite worried about you. The doctors were, too,â She beamed a smile and grabbed his chart at the end of the bed. âYouâre listed as John Doe. The note says that you had no identification on you when you arrived in the ambulance. Do you know your name?â
He nodded and winced from the pain of doing so. âDonald Parks.â
Sara placed his chart at the foot of his bed. âLet me go get a doctor, so he can talk to you.â
âSure, sweetie. Could I get a cup of ice or something to drink?â He placed his hand over his throat.
âCertainly. Iâll be back in a few minutes.â
About five minutes later a man walked into the room. The tall thin man wore a nice suit and a hat that hid his burr cut. He wasnât a doctor, and Parks didnât recall ever seeing this man before. He handed Parks a cup of ice water.
âThe nurse said that youâre Mr. Donald Parks, is that correct?â he asked.
Parks sipped the water. The cold increased the radiating pain throbbing inside of his head, but it did soothe his throat. âYes. Who are you?â
âSid Davis. NSA.â He took his badge from his suit pocket and showed Parks.
âNSA?â
Sid nodded. âYes, sir.â
âWhy? Whatâs wrong?â
âYouâre in pretty bad shape, Mr. Parks. How did you end up in this condition?â
âI was hoping you could tell me.â
âYou donât remember?â
âNo.â
Sid chewed his lower lip for a moment. âThatâs a shame.â
âIâm not happy about it either.â
âI imagine not. Iâd hate to arrest a man when he canât give an alibi, but itâs happened before.â
âArrest? For what?â
Sid sighed. âWell, sir, we found you in a dark alley with two dead Russians and two dead Chinese men. You were the only one alive.â
âYou think Iâm capable of killing four men? Me?â
âI donât know. You tell me.â
âI remember nothing.â
âFor all I know, there might have been a dozen or more men in that alley with you. But all the gathered evidence points directly at you.â
âMe? In my condition?â Parks shook his head. âNo.
