CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

GRACE

The scan and shots went smoothly with only a few winces and yelps. Even Ava submitted to one.

In no time, my friends had translator implants of their own and were eager to explore more of the ship. Especially once Stacy mentioned watching the men spar in the training center.

“Would you mind if we meet up again after?” I asked the group. “I promised the kids that I’d play with them for a bit today.”

“Gurl, I know how much you missed Lil. You do you. We’ll be fine.”

“I’ll stick with them,” Stacy assured me.

With a wave, I fled. I loved each one of my friends, but damn if I wasn’t having a really hard time with their presence. Well, not exactly with their presence but with how openly they were going to be welcomed by every male on board this ship. I was trying so hard not to let it rub me the wrong way, but it did. What had Alernon said in the galley? That no male would turn down a willing female? I wanted to laugh at that since Baynol, the muscled mass of attentive sweetness currently following me, had no problem turning me down.

And what the hell had that lip wipe been? He was just toying with my ovaries at this point, and I wasn’t sure what to do about it. Mostly, I wanted to turn and verbally vent my frustration at him. But how was that fair? He wasn’t obligated to be interested in me just because I was interested in him. And that was the rub in this whole situation. My friends were pretty and had great personalities. The men on this ship would fall over their feet to get to them. They’d all have their pick if they wanted. I’d been in the same boat, except the one who hadn’t fallen for me was the one I wanted to pick.

I shook my head at myself. I just needed to get over Baynol and find someone else to spend my time with. Quinoll was obviously willing.

Releasing a heavy breath, I acknowledged that was exactly why I didn’t like him. He was too desperate. It was Baynol’s damn reservedness that called to me.

“Are you worried about the younglings?” Baynol asked from behind me.

Giving in, I paused and turned to face him.

“No. I wasn’t even thinking of them.” Which probably made me the shittiest aunt in the systems, excluding the worse aunts on Earth, obviously. “Not that I don’t want to see them. I just have a lot going on in my head at the moment.”

His golden eyes studied me.

“I know the success of the trade station is important for the future of your people, but you are not alone, Grace. The burden is not yours to carry by yourself. Let others help you. Let me help you.”

His words hit me right in the heart. I wanted him to help me. I wanted him to be beside me, holding my hand the entire way.

Without realizing what I was doing, I reached out and threaded my fingers through his.
