CHAPTER SIXTEEN

NIK

What the fuck just happened?

Rebecca was gone—taken away—just like that. Jonathan didn’t argue with them, I didn’t argue, or at least not much. I only could say so much before they would double-check my papers and realize they wanted me too. My first instinct was not to care, to go to prison with her, but then this entire mission would have been for nothing. So I just stood there and watched.

And then she was gone.

The paperwork cleared since Rebecca had confessed she lied to us and that none of us seemed to be worthy of a search. I was a little surprised, but it had to do with Burt’s answers when he was questioned in the beginning. All the rest of the paperwork was fine, so I guess they cleared us to go. That, or Bardon pulled some strings to make sure we were in the clear.

But if that was the case, then why did Rebecca get caught? I let out a sigh. Probably because that was what they wanted to happen.

I was pissed at Jonathan. I could tell he was in on it since he didn’t do anything to stop it. Then again, he could have just been quiet because he didn’t want to jeopardize the mission just like me. But he had that look of intent on his face, not one of surprise.

Which was why I was going straight to the cockpit where Jonathan was.

Most of the crew was asleep or at their own duties. No one would hear the discussion that the two of us were about to have, which I was thankful for. I didn’t need them to know the truth about the three of us nor think we were villains and turn us in just like Rebecca.

“Jonathan,” I said as I stepped into the cockpit. “We need to talk.”

He turned and glanced at me with a little smirk. “About time you showed up. Was thinking you hadn’t put two and two together yet.”

Taking a seat next to him, I tried not to let my anger get the better of me. I hated it when he did things like this and presumed I would just figure it out later. “So you were behind this.”

“Oui.”

I clenched my fist. “She’s going straight to a holding cell, you know this right?”

“That’s where you’re wrong, mon ami. She’s going straight to Sebastien.”

“What?” I asked. That made little sense. That was the last thing I ever wanted.

“You remember that her wanted article said she’s needed alive, yes? I suspect that Sebastien will receive word straightaway that she’s alive and in a cell. Then he will come and retrieve her, taking her where we want him to go.”

I let out a deep breath. I knew where he was going with this. “You mean you set her up as bait.”

“You could say that. It was Jacques’s idea, not mine. So if you have a problem with it, talk to him.”

I knew it wasn’t his fault, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t pissed. I was kept in the dark yet again.
