Pulling into my driveway, I put my truck into park. The rain had stopped for the time being, but dark gray clouds off in the distance were heading in my direction as I made my way to the front door. A pair of headlights moved over my house, and when I looked at the vehicle that had just pulled into my drive, I knew there would be no avoiding him this time.
Jehu Bridges pulled into my driveway, turned off his lights, killed the engine, and got out of his vehicle. I stood halfway between my front door and his vehicle.
âYouâre a tough man to track down Job,â said the detective.
I didnât say a word.
âMind if we talk for a few?â Bridges shut his car door.
Sighing deeply, I started walking toward my front door. âCome on in before it rains again.â
In my kitchen, Bridges took a seat while I stood on the opposite end of the kitchen island. Offering him a drink, he asked for a bottled water while I poured myself a glass of chocolate milk. Bridges removed the toothpick from his mouth, swallowed a couple small mouthfuls of water, and put the toothpick back in his mouth.
Emptying my pockets, I placed my cell phone, wallet, and keys on the kitchen countertop next to me.
Detective Bridges got right to the point. âI know youâve been ignoring my calls as well as my visits, Job. I canât say I blame you, but pushing me away isnât helping either.â
I downed my glass of chocolate milk pretty quickly. Walking over to the sink, I had my back to the detective as I rinsed out my glass and put it in the dishwasher.
Turning back around, I said, âYeah, so.â
Bridgesâ face looked angry for a second, but then changed, like he didnât want an argument to commence. âJob, Iâm your friend. Why are you treating me like this?â
Youâre acting like a jerk Job. Here you have a friend who goes out of his way for you, and you have the audacity to treat him like this. Whatâs wrong with you?
âWhen I first started getting to know you,â Jehu went on, âyou were someone different. A man who was faithful to his wife, treated people the way theyâd wanna be treated, a man who I respected and who had morals that any good person would appreciate.â
Ahem, heâs speaking about that old you who we all miss.
âNow,â carried on Bridges, âI donât even know who you are anymore. You look like you havenât shaved for days, your attitude sucks, and I donât hear from you though Iâve tried multiple times trying to contact you.â
Bridges waited for me to respond. After a short time, I finally did. âWhat do you expect, Jehu? That wife who I was always faithful to is dead, and people? I donât care much for many people these days with the way this world is; and, in all honesty, I could care less about who respects me and my morals.
âWith what has happened,â I went on, âitâs changed me inside and out.
