Chapter 28
John performed Dennisâs funeral with emotional and pastoral precision. He even managed to ignore the undercover policemen in the building. After the funeral, he tried to track down Lanie. They needed closure on their affair, especially if he was going to make things right with Kim, but every time she saw him she went the other direction.
A man from the funeral home gave John the guest registry and the remaining programs and asked him to give them to the family. He thumbed through the registry. Perhaps someone who came to the funeral could help him in his quest for the truth. He looked for Buzz Baker or Murphy Hazelton, but didnât see either. How could he find out more about Dennis, Nutridyne, and the OU Norman campus?
Another name made him stop. Larkin Connor. Why had she been at the funeral? How did she know Dennis?
John caught Lanie as she left the church with her brother and the rest of her family. He ran to catch up to them. âMrs. Vance, I wanted to give this to you.â He handed her the items from the funeral home. âCould I talk to you for a second before you leave?â
The look in her eyes implied no. Instead, she nodded. âGo on ahead,â she told the others. âIâll be out in a minute.â
Now wasnât the time to talk about their personal situation, so he got right to his immediate concern. âCould you do me a favor and look through the names in the register? There might be someone you recognize, or donât recognize, who might be of interest in Dennisâs death.â
âThe police already asked for a copy.â
âOkay. I saw the name Larkin Connor. Do you know her?â
Her eyes flashed suspicion. âNo. Why?â
âWhat about Buzz Baker or Murphy Hazelton?â
âNo. Were they here too?â
âNo.â
Lanie sighed. âDo you think I should ask the police to look into those people?â
âMaybe. I donât know.â
They talked for a few more minutes about how the service went. They gave each other a civil hug, and John whispered into her ear, âIâm sorry, Lanie, sorry for everything.â

John stayed late that night during the scripture-based grief recovery program hosted at the church. He ate a Subway meatball sub and read through every file he could find. Fascinating stuff. He learned a great deal about the church, and most of it wasnât good. Maybe that was the wrong way to put it. The church was like everyone else. Not perfect.
Around eight-thirty, he peered through the roomâs small window. The meeting should be about done. The chairs were arranged in a circle, and Brad Mullins led the discussion. But John couldnât take his eyes off the young woman sitting to Bradâs right.
Larkin Connor.
John stepped back and leaned against the wall. What did he know about her? The police considered her relevant enough to ask about her during the investigation of Kimâs disappearance. If he was thirty now, sheâd be about twenty-five. During his high school life, she was a junior high girl who lived in his church district.
