Chapter 14 Run to Memphis

After a day and night, they reached the Marsh boathouse. They stopped just before dawn. Mr. Marsh gave Richard his night vision scope and his spare batteries. With Jan navigating, Richard riding shotgun, and Maria driving, they made good progress. There was no threats or signs of humanity as they passed.

After pushing out of the boathouse an hour after dusk, Richard started the motor. Everyone was ready to respond to any threats, but none appeared.

They passed the Gateway Arch by three AM. At sunrise, they continued to run along the south side of the city. The only evidence of life seen, were two smoke trails.

After clearing the city around noon, they passed by over a hundred anchored barges, including several sunk or burned.

They tied the boat under the bridge for US Fifty/US Two-fifty-five in the late afternoon and they spent the night.

The next day, they made twenty miles before anchoring for the night, south of Kimmswick City, Missouri. Under way before dawn, they made it to just above Cape Girardeau, Missouri before dusk. An hour after full dark, Richard pulled the anchor, and they passed by the town before dawn.

They stopped around noon, beside a pair of barges beached on a sandbar. The barges, were filled with unopened shipping containers. They spent the afternoon opening and checking the contents of each one. Richard was halfway through them when he found one headed for Walmart.

They spent the next day going through that container, and found cases of canned goods, dry goods, and supplies of a wide range of usable and trade-able items. Richard insisted that they be selective since there was more than could be carried without overloading their boat.

When they stopped for the next evening at the junction of the Ohio River, Richard knew if his family made it to safety, they would have come down the Ohio River. He tried to keep his anticipation under control, but it almost overwhelmed him.

His ladies saw him upset and attempted to distract him. Their distractions worked.

In two more days, they reached the Tennessee border and Maria was sick every morning. Richard suspected she might be pregnant.

Richard continued to follow the river navigation markers, most of which, were still intact. They only stopped for the night and twice to salvage gas from abandoned vehicles. They were out of the gas stabilizer, and the motor was smoking. It started missing, and Richard assumed that the plugs were fouling.

The missing got worse, and Richard stopped and spent a day pulling the plugs. Jan brought a spare set of plugs salvaged from the marina. After the new plugs were installed, they moved out again. He spent another day cleaning the old plug set, because the new set would foul, eventually. Within two days the engine started missing, sputtering, and backfiring. Richard figured that the noise killed their stealth mode. He didn't want to change plugs until they were near the next city. As they rounded another curve, a small town with a casino boat moored to a dock appeared.
