CHAPTER NINE

A Very Bad Thing

Aided by her combat suit’s integrated VEX-powered exoskeleton, Torry headed off at a brisk trot in the westerly direction indicated by Charlie. She pressed a button on the side of her helmet and involuntarily jerked her head as the shot of stimulant accelerated through her skin and into her bloodstream. She raced through a stand of tall trees, hoping that her stealth cover held as she rapidly approached an open meadow. She pulled up at its edge and looked up to see numerous faint space-to-ground ionization lines in the surrounding night sky. Good, the assault craft got off, she muttered to herself.

“Charlie, scramble our location and tell me where that other computron is now,” she instructed.

“It’s lifted off from the village. It’s now about fifty meters in the air and headed in the direction of the village you just left.”

“Oh-oh,” Tory squealed. “Does it still have a headache?”

“Yes, but it’s recovering rapidly. Make that a half-hour now.”

Torry again hailed Jared via her com-tag. “You can go ahead and hit village four. Do you detect an aerial vehicle of some sort moving from four toward two?”

“Yes. Why—?”

“Take it out immediately with a laser or particle beam strike!”

Within seconds, four beams of green, coherent light flashed down from outer space and converged on a single point. Torry couldn’t make out whether or not the target had been hit. Normally a very cool operator, this scenario presented a stern challenge to the maintenance of her usual sangfroid.

“Commodore, did you take it out?” she asked, an anxious edge to her voice.

“Negative. The vehicle has stopped, and the beams are being repelled by energy shielding. I can have the SC pump some more juice from the VEX units. As it’s static in local space, there’s lots of capacity.”

“You said it’s stopped?”

“Yes.”

Torry had a sinister thought and said, “Charlie, can you still detect the computron or the vehicle?”

“No. I lost contact immediately before the orbital strike. If you give me a second I should be able to detect the type of energy shielding being used. . . . Bad news Tor, it’s a warp-bubble.”

“A what?”

“A warp-bubble.”

Torry swore silently, then opened the link to Jared again. “I’m afraid you’re wasting your time, Commodore,” she said. “We have us a problem. The vehicle is hiding inside a warp-bubble. That means it’s a Naan bubble-drive conveyance. Why am I not surprised? I’ll tell you what surprises me, though. Why hasn’t it just taken off? It must know we couldn’t touch it if it did that. Somebody really wants to get into that village very badly.”

“Yes, we’ve detected the stationary space-time distortion,” Jared said. “Do you want me to discontinue the bombardment?”

“Keep it in place till you hear from me,” Torry said. “I’ll get back to you momentarily, just as soon as I figure out what’s happening. Lynne clear.”

Torry stood at the edge of the stand of trees and tapped her fingers impatiently on her webbing as she pondered her next move. The occupant or occupants
