Chapter 16

“What…What do you mean?”

I stared at him, dumbfounded.

Drykan killed King Cadoc…

Drykan killed his father….

Was he joking? He had to have been.

“What do you think I mean, Isadora?” He shook his head, a look of guilt and hopelessness on his face. “I killed him.”

“No, no, you didn't—he died of heart problems.” I argued.

I remembered finding out the news five years prior. I had been with Mirana in the garden, and father called our attention to tell us of King Cadoc’s death.

I remembered going to the funeral to pay our respects. All of The Day and The Night attended, the commoners lining up the streets in his honor and singing Amazing Grace.

Drykan gave a speech of how wonderful a father and king he was. He was wiping tears from his eyes as he talked of the good memories.

Afterwards, in the hall, I watched as he comforted a sobbing Roslyn. They didn't know I was there.

There was no possible way that Drykan had killed his father.

“He had heart problems, but he didn't die from it,” Drykan corrected. “I poisoned his glass. It set in that night and mother found him dead the next morning in their bed. She assumed his heart stopped working or something of the sort, since that was the only explanation.” His whole body was tense as he explained, but his voice was eerily calm.

Shining stars….

Drykan was a murderer. I was engaged to a murderer. A traitor to his kingdom. To his family.

I stood up, my mind finally kicking into gear. “How could you?” I demanded, my fist clenching at my side. “How could you, Drykan? He was your father—”

“He was a monster!” he snapped, standing up as well. It was like a switch had been flipped.

I shook my head. “This is terrible, Drykan! Do you know what would happen to you if this got out?”

He gave me a deadly look. “That’s why it won't. This cannot get out, Isadora. I won't let it.”

My eyes widened. “Is that a threat?”

“Of course not! Is that how you’re going to see me now, someone who threatens people—”

“You poisoned your father! Why wouldn't you threaten people?”

“No, but you don't understand! Of course you don't!” His jaw clenched, and it looked like he was holding back a tsunami of emotions. “Blazing sunlight, my father was horrible, Isadora!”

Horrible?! His father was a little strict, yes, but he wasn't horrible!

“He wasn't the best king, or maybe not even the best father, but how on earth could you—what kind of person kills their own father?” I demanded, my voice on the brink of a scream.

“You won't get away with this—” I started to walk away, into the ballroom to tell someone, anyone, of the terrible thing he had done.

Without a single word, he grabbed my arm and pulled me down the hall.

“What are you doing?!” I exclaimed, but he ignored me, opening up a door near the staircase that led to the next floor. He forced me in, then shut the door and locked it.

Silently, he slipped off his overcoat, putting it on a chair in the corner of the mostly-empty room.
