Chapter Twelve

The chugging howl of the tornado diminished as it continued north into the farmland past the lazy town of Julesburg, Colorado. It remained just as powerful as it had been when it entered the town.

“We should chase it down before it hits another town,” Luke said. One of the main reasons he had joined the NTRC Knights was to stop this from happening to another town, and here he sat, looking at the newly flattened landscape beyond the windshield of his vehicle.

“We aren’t going anywhere,” Ryder informed him. “Once the spikes are set, we’re stuck. Liam is going to have to remove them…or rather, he will need to remove Shadow from the spikes. They are deeply embedded in the ground. Thankfully. That’s the very reason we’re not upside down in that building or worse.” He motioned towards one of the large, white buildings on the other side of the street.

“Let’s check the damage,” Chase offered, cracking his door open for the first time. The other two followed suit.

Luke was surprised there wasn’t much damage to the vehicle or the armor plating. The vehicle was designed to take on tornadoes, including all the hail, debris, and carnage they brought. He had seen the RMT vehicles after being picked up and thrown, but even then, the vehicles didn’t bend and crumple like passenger cars.

“Anything?” a voice called from behind them. Luke turned to see Liam carrying a toolbox and the rest of the team hurrying over to them. Roxy was the quickest of all. As soon as her eyes caught Luke’s she began jogging towards him.

Luke was shaken. He hadn’t truly known if they would survive the close encounter. He had felt fear and sorrow, but most of all, he was pissed when he saw that the town sustained a direct hit, without even an attempt at trying to stop the murderous storm. But, when he saw Roxy, with tears in her eyes, rushing over to him, he felt guilt. Guilt for worrying her and for almost putting her through the loss of more teammates.

Ultimately, Luke’s emotions were running wild, and he wasn’t sure how to process them.

Roxy leapt the final few feet, soaring briefly through the air, and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she repeated over and over. Luke wasn’t sure if she was addressing him or a higher power.

“I’m okay. We’re okay,” he said in a monotone voice.

Emergency sirens blared as the local firefighters began loading into their vehicles. By some miracle, the fire station had been spared from the worst of the destruction. Looking through Roxy’s hair as they embraced, Luke could see the building’s windows had all been destroyed, and one of the large bay doors was bent and twisted, but the building itself survived, along with the vehicles within.

Wolfe and Allison reached Luke and gave him a nod. “You good?” the commander asked.

“Yes, sir.”

Wolfe put a hand on Luke’s shoulder as he passed to check in with Ryder and Chase.
