Chapter 19

“Move everyone out of the room before the explosion.” Rem has the container in his hand and is about to blow up the generator. “I’ll give you five minutes. Promise me you’ll leave the room before.”

“I promise.”

“No matter what.” Rem makes sure I meet his gaze this time around.

“Absolutely!” I am trusting my survival instinct to take care of that request.

Rem takes off, landing by the back door and rushing outside.

When Rem disappears, I sweep my hand across my forehead to wipe the sweat and get ready to complete the task. However, the females are resting on the ground instead of freeing the male prisoners.

Gritting my teeth, I dart to the back, cracking my whip. I hate threatening the natives, but I will do whatever it takes to get everyone out of danger.

The prisoners hurry to their feet and hustle to the front, helping others along the way. My forceful intervention speeds up the evacuation process. Almost half the room is empty by the two-minute mark, and everyone is gathering by the door.

When there are less than twenty seconds left of the countdown, I realize I will not leave the room in time.

I am about to dash to the front when a female trots to the back wall. I command her to turn around, but she continues her steady trot unaltered. Defying an arsenal of fears, I chase after her. I catch up to her and pull from her arm to guide her to safety.

The female is disoriented and resists with incredible strength.

“You must go back!”

The female still shows no sign of comprehension.

I close my eyes and punch her in the face.

The mongrel falls to the ground but still insists on fighting me off.

With just seconds to spare, I grab her feet and drag her to the front. I have managed to advance ten feet when the female screams in distress.

Her agonizing shrieks attract several prisoners’ attention, who react very negatively to a guard dragging an elder by the feet. The rescue mission is about to turn into a slaughter.

Just as the group is about to seize me, the explosion blows everyone off their feet.

The momentary darkness recedes as the fire spreads, unleashing chaos.

For an entire minute, I stay on the floor, recovering from the blast.

The front door remains closed, and everyone is still gathered inside the burning room.

“Get out of the room!” But my words are lost amidst the madness.

Ramesh is standing by the door with her family.

I wave at her until she meets my gaze and then signal her to open the door.

Ramesh interprets my request right away. But even after she opens the door, none of the prisoners dare step out for fear of the guards.

With smoke thickening, unless the mongrels soon evacuate the room, they will all perish.

I keep flicking the whip until a handful of prisoners poke their heads into the corridor. When no guards confront them, the rest follow suit in a stampede.

The fire has reached the turbine and is causing all kinds of explosions as the electrical system catches on fire.
