AGENDA

“Yes, sir… I understand… That’s not necessary, I can get… yes, he is... I’m not sure… yes… I’ll have him speak with you.”

Preston kept watch over the pressurized entrance, listening to Price as he spoke with the company. The tetchiness in Price’s voice grew more apparent with each word spoken. The security lead stepped into the cabin area. He had clipped the communicator back to his belt. In looking at him, Preston could see that he was on edge. He’d been antsy since Riegle had departed for the control tower. He almost appeared sick.

“You okay there?” Preston said.

Price shot him a filthy glare. His face was tense, just shy of baring teeth. “Say what again?” he said.

“I’m asking as a medic,” Preston said. “You look, rather, you were looking borderline nauseous.”

The scowl never left Price’s face as he started back for the armory.

“Just dandy,” he said.

Preston peeked his head around the door, watching him all the way to the hangar. The sound of chuckling drew Preston’s attention behind him. He turned around, seeing Officer Kozak cupping his mouth to keep his laughter down.

“Don’t mind him, Bud,” Kozak said. “He just knows his number’s up.”

“I beg your pardon?”

“The company was getting ready to fire him,” Kozak said. “The prick actually thought he’d not only save his job, but also get himself promoted into Murphy’s spot.” He chuckled again and peeked through the doorway, making sure he wasn’t being overheard by Price.

“I’m assuming it’s not looking too good for him,” Preston said.

“No,” Kozak said. “Especially since Riegle is the one in there helping your team. Because of that, he’s worried the company will find Riegle more valuable and promote him instead, which I think would be a wise decision. And if that happens, Price can wave bye-bye to his job, a bonus, raise, anything else he wants to squeeze from the company to pay his debts. Hence, he’s a little cranky, as you just saw.”

Preston nodded. “Sounds like it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”

“Amen to that, brother.”
