CHAPTER SIXTEEN

IF SHE SHIFTED, would she accidentally take the webbing and the spider along with them? Were the others stuck to the smaller sticky threads strung between the larger support threads? Kelsey tugged at her hand again, finding it even more firmly stuck to the web.

"What have you done to my web?" a cranky male voice demanded, with the words slurred towards the end. "Haven't you dratted metallics done enough damage?"

The next second the spider disappeared. Then a shape loomed over her from the top of a double stacked crate.

She screamed as she fell backwards, her feet and legs tangling further into strands. "Thalen!"

The spider leaned down from the crate, the front legs against the side while the back legs kept it anchored to the top. A low chuckle rumbled out as it watched her struggle. "Does the little Weaver think she's about to be eaten? Perhaps I should consider it, as you are damaging my web. Do you have the mind to know a true threat from one who only wishes to help?"

Kelsey stopped her struggle and stared up at it. It stayed where it was, looking down at her with all its eyes. It wanted to help? She didn't want the thing anywhere near her. Big spiders had been the one bane of her existence in the landscaping business.

"Considering the appetite of the Agrenia Spider, it's a logical reaction." Thalen knelt down and put a hand on her shoulder. "Let him extract you from the webbing. You'll simply destroy more of it by your struggles. We'll cover you."

"Agrenia? An insult, Weaver! I am of the Kraknis."

Thalen glanced up at it. "My apologies. It has been some time since I have met one of your kind."

"Greetings, Kraknis," Indigo said. "Kelsey, the species is well known to the Chisomi for eons. If he intended harm, he would have already indicated his intentions."

"Hmph. Chisomi, as well. Interesting." The spider legs continued to work away at the strands, allowing her leg to come free.

"You have a lovely web," Samanya said. Kelsey glanced at the dark form of her heart-sister. Lovely? Was she crazy?

"Wait, a whole group of Weavers. I should have known you would show up in the midst of this mess. Is there a tangle among your Strings as well as all else?" The spider mused as it climbed down. Kelsey tried not to flinch as one of the front legs extended to hook one of the strands coiled around her leg. "Or is there something more? Yes, something more, I think."

Her leg freed, the creature reached out with its other front leg and worked the webbing off of her hand. If Thalen didn't still sit next to her, she would have struggled as the bristly leg touched her skin. She felt one of the strands come out of her hair as one of the legs passed over her head.

"The little one is still frightened." Its head hovered in front of her own, the jaws closing, "I may not appreciate my web destroyed, but I doubt you would provide a satisfying meal.
