â¦a smaller Bomber Commandâ¦a tightly organised and efficient bombing force, flexible enough to be switched in emergency to direct army support in attacking enemy tanks, transport and troops close to the front line. Operating conditions for the men of these night bomber squadrons were very different from the conditions prevailing for Bomber Command crews in Europe. The 205 Group Squadrons were units of a mobile bomber force based in tents, trucks and improvised runways scraped from the desert surfaceâ¦airfield equipment was primitive, maintenance of engines and airframes difficult, living conditions always uncomfortable, âgippy tummyâ was common, relaxation in cities with music, dancing and female company was rare indeed; rising sand and Khamsin conditions2, hot humid days and freezing nights were part of the environmentâ¦on the happier side, weather conditions were settled for longer periods and targets were usually less heavily defended than in Germany and losses on normal missions were lower than for Bomber Command. Exceptions were the âMail Runâ, regular targets frequently attacked, such as Benghazi and Tobruk.
Another insight into the Wellington operations is found in RAF Middle East, The Official Story of Air Operations in the Middle East, from February 1942 to January 1943. It is worth quoting:
