Chapter 14

-Orren-

“I still don’t see,” I grumbled as I plodded along, “why I had to come along.” I poked my chest yet again, frowning at the lack of a heartbeat beneath my ribs. Pale dust clung to my boots and I scowled at the ravine that seemed bottomless beneath my feet. It seemed like only yesterday when we argued around Queen Jamine, and I couldn’t figure out why an enthusiastic Nourn—not Lett, because he was too young—couldn’t have taken my place. The kid had a good head on his shoulder. Or especially Anek, who had elected to stay behind and watch over the Berrou brothers. I might not be the greatest kidsitter in the world, but I could at least keep them out of too much trouble until Wenny came back. Instead, I was moping along behind her, headed towards the heart of Lostland once again.

“Quit your whining, Orren,” Dawn said from where she walked behind me. Her legs wobbled as she slowly moved across the crumbling bridge and the grip she kept on my left hand was tight enough for me to wonder about never regaining feeling into my fingers. Eithe may have known a shorter route to the Rubble, but his sister wasn’t appreciating what that route was comprised of. “You’re making me lose my concentration.”

She clenched tighter, swayed dangerously to the left, and I braced myself, knees slightly bent, pulling her towards me. She flung her arms around my neck as I hoisted her up, hooking my elbows under her knees. She spoke, her words muffled into my back, “Keep on, I’m fine.”

With a sigh, I continued on carefully as she moved in line with my steps, and I looked past Wenny and Taven, already past the bridge’s edge, to where Eithe and Cahri led the way. From their rigid postures and severe silence, I could tell even from this distance that they still weren’t speaking to each other, and I shook my head slightly. What a mess they were. Both wished the other would stay out of danger, yet both knew they had no choice but to get involved in the thick of it.

“You’re a lot tougher than you think, you know,” Dawn suddenly said, startling me out of my contemplation.

I glanced back, baffled. “What?”

“You,” she said, pulling her head away from my back to look up at me. “You’re not the wimp that you keep trying to be. That’s why you’re here.”

I snorted, looking forward. “So I can be your personal towrope when you’re about to fall, princess?” Setting her down, I jumped the last gap between solid ground and rotting planks, and her fingers enclosed around my gloved palms let me go once I helped her leap across. She wouldn’t look at me, straightening her skirts and clearing her throat. I, on the other hand, couldn’t stop staring at her mouth—her stupid, pretty,
