THE FURNISHING OF PARTICULARS

Resistance proved exclusive to the leader and restricted to impassioned vociferations. Detainment at such a critical juncture of our mission was deeply regrettable, but worse was to follow.

While one officer remained upon our captured conveyance, the other conducted us onto the vessel whence they had descended – with the exception of my maternal uncle, who by virtue of his dark attire and horizontal orientation appeared to escape thei r notice. Though naturally reluctant to separate from him after my earlier promise, I reasoned that in the event of the two vessels diverging I might easily call attention to his existence, whereas he could not when once discovered be again concealed. Fu rthermore, the almost empty craft in which he now lay decumbent afforded a greater degree of quiet in which he might recuperate from his debauch and discombobulation.

Two activists carried the now silent leader, who had in the course of his verbal resistan ce suffered neuromuscular incapacitation from a conducted electrical weapon. (This somewhat excessive use of force, allegedly permissible under martial law, was perpetrated by the officer who now remained to constitute the unwitting company of my avuncula r relative.) Seated in the stern of the new vessel, the activists were asked for names and identification and, after enquiries as to their employment status and places of abode, obliged each to sign a receipt for an official caution. This caused me no gr eat alarm, I having no previous criminal record and the same surely being true of my esteemed colleague. I therefore upon request furnished my particulars without ado. An accompanying perquisition of my pockets also happened to reveal, previously believe d lost, my maternal uncle ’s written instructions and letter to Mr. Carruthers. The questioning officer thereupon conducted a closer perusal of my visage and then spent perhaps a minute consulting his mobile telephone. This done, he addressed Dr. Kamaruza man.

“Are you with him?”

I must here record a matter of scientific interest: though never before subject to promptings of instinct, I somehow at that moment sensed a threat in a way for which as a man of science I can not account.

Said I consequently, “No, officer. I am solus.”

I endeavoured to avoid eye contact with my esteemed colleague after this act of public disownment.

In a tone of voice I had not previously heard her adopt and which I was unable to decode, she affirmed my asseveration:

“He’s an archipelago.”

“Whatever,” said the officer, and produced a pair of handcuffs. “Dr. Grossmann, you will remain under arrest.”

In my moment of speechless shock he fastened the said items upon my wrists.

Said I in discombobulation, “For what?”

Said he, “For the murder of Barnaby Carruthers.”
