Chapter 9
âTaylor!â Russ shouted from the other side of the bathroom door. âClose the shower curtain. Iâm coming in.â
Resting her head against the back of the tub until the warm, soothing water covered her shoulders, Taylor turned a disinterested glance toward the door. She felt sleepy and lethargic. âGo away,â she called lazily, then proceeded to yawn, covering her mouth with the back of her hand.
âIf you donât want to close the curtain, itâs fine with me. Actually, Iâd be grateful if you didnât.â
The doorknob started to turn and, muttering at the intrusion, Taylor reached for the plastic curtain and jerked it closed.
âDamn,â Russ said from the other side, not bothering to hide his disappointment. âI was hoping youâd be more stubborn than this.â
âWhy are you here?â she demanded.
âI live here, remember?â
âI mean in the bathroom! You have no business walking in on me like this.â Actually, Taylor should have been out of the shower long ago, but the water was so warm and relaxing, and it felt so good.
âIâm taking these clothes out so Mandy can put them in the washing machine,â he said, and his voice faded as he went down the hall.
All too soon he was back. âStick out your arm.â
âWhy?â
âYouâll find out.â
Taylor exhaled sharply, her hold on her temper precarious. âMay I remind you that Iâm stark naked behind this curtain.â
âTrust me, lady, I know that. Itâs playing hell with my imagination. Now stick out your arm before Iâm forced to pull back this shower curtain.â
Grinding her teeth, Taylor did as he asked, knowing full well heâd follow through with his threat given the least provocation. Almost immediately a hot mug was pressed into her palm. She brought it behind the curtain and was immediately struck by the scent of whiskey and honey mixed with hot water. âWhatâs this for?â
âItâll help warm you.â
âI wasnât really that chilled.â Actually, sheâd been far too angry to experience anything more than minimal discomfort.
âIf you want the truth,â Russ said in low, seductive tones, âI was hoping the drink would help take the edge off your anger.â
âItâs going to take a whole lot more than whiskey to do that.â
âThatâs what I thought,â he muttered. âIâve left a couple of Mandyâs things here for you to change into when youâve finished. Thereâs no hurry, so take all the time you want.â
âAre you leaving now?â she asked impatiently.
âYes, but Iâll be waiting for you.â
âI figured you would be,â she grumbled.
A thick pale blue flannel robe that zipped up the front was draped over the edge of the sink, along with a pair of fuzzy pink slippers. After Taylor had finished drying, she slipped into those, conscious that she wore nothing underneath.
Russ was sitting at the kitchen table. âWhereâs Mandy?â she asked, doing her best to sound casual and composed, as if she often walked around a manâs home in nothing more than a borrowed robe.
âSheâs on the phone, talking to Travis Wellsâs boy.â
This must be the famous Eddie whoâd caused Taylor so much grief.
