The assassin wouldn’t wake for some hours, so Saber busied himself by preparing for a test of the Interface. He needed to see what effect it would have on the entire clone population before he approved the final version of the design. He had played with it periodically before flying to Chicago, but this was the first generalized test. Perhaps, he could use it to find Tundra out there somewhere in the vast collection of memories. His experience in Chicago left him with the tantalizing hope that maybe a clone of Tundra existed that he could recruit to help him manage TAP. Elkhorn and Alder were getting too surly.

He slipped the helmet onto his head and initiated the system. A surge of energy swept through him, and pain like he had never known flashed into his mind. A swooping nausea rushed into his gut. He reeled and almost fell from the chair. Grinding his teeth, he bent his will to dominate the Interface, but it didn’t respond. There was another mind there grasping for control, and it was a woman’s. It had a feminine feel to it that he couldn’t describe.

“No,” Saber growled, “the Interface is mine.”

Closing his eyes against the agony, he searched for the source of the mind. Images filtered into his brain in the chaos of the Interface.

“D.C.,” he breathed. “She’s in D.C.”

A smile crept over his lips as he clicked off the Interface. Now, he had her.
