HANNAH

It’s 19:30. And there’s no sign of the Murphys at San Bella.

Come on, where are you? Don’t do this to me. I need to see you this week, Max.

‘What are you doing?’

I look up from the reservation book to see my manager glaring at me.

‘Sorry. I was just checking if Table Six are still booked in.’

‘Yes, they are. Now get back to work.’

I rush back onto the restaurant floor, returning to doing what I’m paid to do here instead of dithering by the door and hoping to see Max.

If the Murphys are coming, then they’re late. If they’re not coming, then this is going to be a very bad night, not least because Tom is in again, and he’s always got his eyes on me whenever I move across the room.

But then I see the man I’m looking for.

Max.

He is here.

But he’s alone.

I can see Becki has already been summoned to seat him, and I watch as she leads him to the familiar table by the window. But despite not being his official waitress this evening, there is no way I’m not going to talk to Max at some point tonight.

My shift continues as normal, and I watch as Max orders his drinks and his starter, but it’s around the midway point of his meal when I see an opportunity to get closer to him. Max’s main course is sitting on the pass, that area of the kitchen where the plates that are ready to be served sit under the hot lights for the waitresses to take. Becki should be springing into action now to prevent the perfectly cooked meal getting cold, but she isn’t. She’s too busy looking at her phone, which she shouldn’t have on her during her shift, but she’s never been one to worry about the rules. It would usually bother me but not tonight. Not when I can take Max’s meal instead of her.

‘I’ve got it,’ I say as I pick up Max’s plate and head for the door, and Becki barely looks up from her device as I pass her, not even thanking me for doing the thing she should be doing.

Reaching Max’s table, I notice that he is looking a little forlorn, and I want to get to the bottom of that right away.

‘Hi,’ I say, making sure to put on my biggest and best smile as he sees me. ‘Here’s your main course.’

I drop the plate down on the table in front of him, and he thanks me. But I’m not done yet.

‘Is everything okay? I notice you’re not here with your wife.’

‘Oh, erm. Yeah. She’s fine. She’s just feeling a little under the weather this evening.’

‘Oh, that’s a shame. I hope she’s better soon.’

‘Thank you.’

‘Yeah, it’s never as much fun eating alone, is it?’

‘No, not quite.’

‘Well, don’t worry. I’m always happy to chat if you need some company. When I’m not serving these other tables, of course.’

Max smiles, and I’m doing a good job of getting him to like me even more.
