HANNAH
Itâs 19:30. And thereâs no sign of the Murphys at San Bella.
Come on, where are you? Donât do this to me. I need to see you this week, Max.
âWhat are you doing?â
I look up from the reservation book to see my manager glaring at me.
âSorry. I was just checking if Table Six are still booked in.â
âYes, they are. Now get back to work.â
I rush back onto the restaurant floor, returning to doing what Iâm paid to do here instead of dithering by the door and hoping to see Max.
If the Murphys are coming, then theyâre late. If theyâre not coming, then this is going to be a very bad night, not least because Tom is in again, and heâs always got his eyes on me whenever I move across the room.
But then I see the man Iâm looking for.
Max.
He is here.
But heâs alone.
I can see Becki has already been summoned to seat him, and I watch as she leads him to the familiar table by the window. But despite not being his official waitress this evening, there is no way Iâm not going to talk to Max at some point tonight.
My shift continues as normal, and I watch as Max orders his drinks and his starter, but itâs around the midway point of his meal when I see an opportunity to get closer to him. Maxâs main course is sitting on the pass, that area of the kitchen where the plates that are ready to be served sit under the hot lights for the waitresses to take. Becki should be springing into action now to prevent the perfectly cooked meal getting cold, but she isnât. Sheâs too busy looking at her phone, which she shouldnât have on her during her shift, but sheâs never been one to worry about the rules. It would usually bother me but not tonight. Not when I can take Maxâs meal instead of her.
âIâve got it,â I say as I pick up Maxâs plate and head for the door, and Becki barely looks up from her device as I pass her, not even thanking me for doing the thing she should be doing.
Reaching Maxâs table, I notice that he is looking a little forlorn, and I want to get to the bottom of that right away.
âHi,â I say, making sure to put on my biggest and best smile as he sees me. âHereâs your main course.â
I drop the plate down on the table in front of him, and he thanks me. But Iâm not done yet.
âIs everything okay? I notice youâre not here with your wife.â
âOh, erm. Yeah. Sheâs fine. Sheâs just feeling a little under the weather this evening.â
âOh, thatâs a shame. I hope sheâs better soon.â
âThank you.â
âYeah, itâs never as much fun eating alone, is it?â
âNo, not quite.â
âWell, donât worry. Iâm always happy to chat if you need some company. When Iâm not serving these other tables, of course.â
Max smiles, and Iâm doing a good job of getting him to like me even more.
