Chapter Ten

Fade in: on a few streams of morning light sneaking through cracks in the Fun Castle’s ceiling, carrying a gentle birdsong that teases Stacey away from her dreams.

She lies curled up in a scatter of tablecloths and torn sleeping bags with the dogs. Despite their presence, she shivers, holding herself tight.

Waking, she rises with a stretching yawn. The dogs do the same, wandering off in search of food and a place to relieve themselves, Bonezo making for his preferred plastic plant.

Minutes later, Stacey, arms wrapped around a box of Circus Fun cereal, marches to a round table. She sets it for four, filling each bowl till they overflow.

“Breakfast!” she yells, and the ensuing stampede sounds like more than three dogs. Peaches, Cream, and Bonezo dive into their bowls, scooping sloppy mouthfuls without care, barely even attempting to chew before swallowing.

The feeding frenzy is over before Stacey can even sit down. The dogs scarper, leaving their bowls upturned and clattering to the floor.

Stacey sulks. She shoves a mouthful of dry cereal down her throat and chomps her breakfast down alone.
