Success! How Five Organizations Have Set the Course

The purest treasure mortal times afford

Is spotless reputation. . . .

—William Shakespeare

IN THIS CHAPTER, we consider best practices by offering glimpses inside five very different organizations, Cisco, Starbucks, the health care services firm DaVita, Microsoft, and O’Melveny & Myers, the successful international law firm. Although these firms vary by size, industry, locations, and business objectives, each of them is cultivating civility within its workplace, and each attributes at least some part of its success to that fact. The steps these firms have taken span the entire human resources cycle; in essence, these firms have decided that it’s better (and cheaper!) to curtail or prevent incivility throughout an employee’s tenure than to fix it once it takes hold.
