Chapter 34

Godsmacked

In the blink of an eye, Hachiman – the war-bound Ancient – had already drawn his bow and nocked a resplendent fiery arrow three times the size of Slip. With no warning or words, he loosed it, causing Slip to shield his face from the sudden assault.

Fsssh!

The arrow crashed into the stone tile in front of Slip and detonated a cone of fire over him, making him realize it was a very intensive warning shot.

“You would interfere with a duel and dishonor thousands of your people?” Slip challenged even more brazenly.

“Like your precious Ancient saved your pathetic life in the west?” Hachiman rebuked, resting his bow on the ground in front of him. “We of the east are not craven, like you.”

Slip chortled, still holding his side from the pain. “If venturing here to plead my case for the Cosmic Blade… if journeying all this way to tell you that I come in peace to represent Earth against the Coalition of Breakers… if all that means craven, then yes, I’m definitely craven.”

“Quiet, augmented warrior of Eganian.” The fires within the pits surrounding Hachiman blew outward, horse whinnying in his voice growing louder.

“You sound like you swallowed a farm.”

“Silence! You unleash chaos at the port, and death of innocent Singers thereafter.”

Death? Gulgan and Icon… what in Tech are you two idiots doing?

“You, Infinite Spear, are declaring war. And I am here to counter just that.” Hachiman waved all ten flames out in one stroke.

“You see things as you want to see them, then,” Slip challenged. “If you looked deeper with your all-seeing eyes, you would know I tried to stop the two of whom you speak. They are my enemy, same as they are yours. They betrayed me on my journey to explain my goal and obtain the Cosmic Blade before Daku Atari does.”

“I cannot allow you to go any further.” Hachiman drew his bow once more in a flash, nocking an arrow so tight the bow-string straightened into a triangle.

“Before you shoot.” Slip raised his chin. “Tell me, who of the eastern Ancients is your enemy?”

“My enemy?” The Ancient raised an eyebrow, his mask-like face clinking as it moved.

“Yes! Who is the enemy of deceitful chaos among your lands? Because that’s the Ancient who I will befriend.”

Hachiman pulled the arrow even farther back.

“Go ahead, cowardly god. Do it.” Slip puffed his chest.

“Foolish invader. I will not be the one who drops the axe. I will only give the order.” Hachiman’s eyes steamed, and then he suddenly turned and shot the resplendent arrow into the stone tile Iriad stood upon, washing Tech curative dust over him.

Iriad’s armor re-stitched into ornate wrapping, and his swords materialized smoothly along his back once more.

Shit. Slip grimaced.

“I did warn you, Infinite Spear.” Iriad regained his confidence. “You played with fire by stepping into this arena, and now you will suffer the consequences, again.” He dashed forward to Hachiman’s pleasure, exchanging a yellow-outlined sword for a crimson one.

He extended his arms overhead as he leapt into the air, all while Slip’s attempt to call his spear proved too slow.
