The Hips
When I first met Valerie I found it hard to reconcile the slim 32-year-old with the color photograph she showed me. Two years prior to her visit, Valerie had carried 225 pounds on her five foot, six inch frame. Working twice a week with a nutritionist and three times a week with a trainer, she had lost nearly one hundred pounds and many inches.
“I have a strange complaint,” she began, “and I don't know what to do about it. When I was heavy, I walked a certain way. To be perfectly honest, I waddled. Instead of lifting my legs, I sort of slid my feet out to the side, one after the other. Now that I'm thin—and fit—I still do it. Sometimes I even catch myself limping. Why am I doing this?”
Valerie's complaint is more prevalent than she ever imagined. Many women without weight problems who sit throughout the day trigger an imbalance of the muscles around their hips. Walking becomes difficult; many couldn't run even if they wanted to. Others feel a pinch in the groin.
I did a manual muscle test on Valerie and found a consistent weakness in her gluteus medius, the pelvis-hip muscle. This kind of weakness can create a limp or waddle. Hold Valerie that stabilizing her spine and hip muscles was necessary to allow her gluteus medius to work at full capacity.
Using the Core Program, Valerie stabilized her spine and stretched her hips while simultaneously bolstering the muscles in her torso. The result was that Valerie's waddling gait disappeared.
