As Cornell’s website explains, several schools use the early decision process as a reward for students who decide that a certain school is their top choice and show no desire to attend any other school.

Just because you apply early decision and express a desire to attend that school above any other doesn’t mean you’re going to get in with a B average and subpar standardized test scores, though. It’s hard to track how the grades and scores of students accepted early decision stack up against those who are accepted through the regular process. Although you might have a little more flexibility through early decision—you’re typically competing against several thousand fewer students when applying early—the grades and scores required won’t be that much different.
