To bring us back to brassy and in-your-face, we have American brewers’ version of a jarringly bitter IPA—Imperial or Double IPA. These distinctly high alcohol recipes call for hops high on resiny aroma. As a group, American brewers tend to up the IPA ante for higher alcohol and bitterness, utilizing Cascade hops in particular to take the traditional India Pale to places never dreamed of a century ago.

Classic American Imperial/Double IPAs include Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Bell’s Hopslam, Russian River Brewing Pliny the Elder, Stone Brewing Ruination IPA, and Victory Brewing Hop Wallop. The names say it all.
