CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âYOUâRE ACTING WEIRD,â Nicole told Raoul as she stood in the middle of the family room.
He didnât look up from the textbook on his lap. âHow?â
âI donât know. You keep looking at the clock.â
As if to prove her point, Raoul glanced at the clock above the fireplace, then shrugged. âI want to know what time it is.â
âEvery fifteen seconds?â
He looked at her. âItâs not that often.â
âClose.â She knew something was going on, but couldnât figure out what. âIâm going to start dinner,â she said.
âIâm not hungry.â
She put her hands on her hips. âIf youâre breathing, youâre hungry. Whatâs going on? You might as well tell me now. Iâll find out eventually.â
His attempt to look innocent failed. âNothing.â He looked at the clock again, then jumped up. âIâm going to study at Marcusâs house. His parents are home. The numberâs on the counter in the kitchen.â
âWhat about dinner?â
âIâll eat there.â He bolted past her, heading for the kitchen. âIâll be late,â he yelled over his shoulder.
And then he was gone.
âTalk about weird,â Nicole muttered, wondering what he was really doing. She doubted it was anything bad, but still. Had she been this strange when sheâd been his age?
Someone rang the front bell before she could decide. She crossed the great room and pulled the door open, only to find Hawk standing on her porch.
Instantly her insides sighed in appreciation. Despite their last meeting, which had ended badly, he still looked good. Better than good. He looked deliciously tempting.
âYouâre home,â he said, not sounding surprised.
Suddenly Raoulâs odd behavior made sense. âYou set me up.â
âIn a good way,â Hawk told her as he entered the house. He held up two big bags that smelled amazing. âChinese food. You havenât had dinner. Weâll eat, weâll talk, weâll be friends again.â
âIs that what we are?â she asked.
âSure.â He set down the bags and cupped her face. âHey. Iâm sorry.â
Despite her dancing hormones, she wasnât going to be won over by male beauty and an egg roll.
âFor?â she asked.
âMaybe overreacting.â
âMaybe? You plan to decide soon?â
âI overreacted. You were trying to help. I didnât see it that way.â He kissed her with just enough pressure to make her lean toward him. âDid I say I was sorry?â
âYes.â
âDid you accept my apology?â
âI am now, because Iâm sorry, too. I can be pushy.â
âBut cute. So weâre good?â
She smiled. âYes.â
They went into the kitchen. While he put boxes of Chinese onto the table, she collected plates, flatware and napkins. He opened the bottle of wine she handed him, then they sat down to eat.
âYour point about Brittany is a good one,â he said, which she hadnât expected. âMaybe I did make the past sound better than it was. Serena and I didnât set out to do that on purpose, we just didnât want Brittany to feel she wasnât special or that sheâd gotten in the way.â
Nicole was impressed he was willing to discuss this and see her side. âMaybe thereâs some middle ground. A casual story about how it wasnât all easy and wonderful.
