I’d just finished cooking up my third cup of MRE coffee on my little camp stove when Rae and Skeeter emerged from the foliage in front of the church, Rae carrying plastic bags filled with Styrofoam take-out containers.

“Rough night?” she asked as I yawned wearily despite myself.

I glanced at Skeeter then back to her. I shrugged.

She got the message, giving me a brief nod. “Skeeter, I think we are going to go on in and talk with Walsh. Can you watch Rev’s gear while we’re inside?” she asked, casting a glance down at the hot stove.

Skeeter’s face split in a wide grin. “Don’t have to twist my arm to get me to sit around and whittle,” he said as he dropped down onto a stump, producing a piece of virgin driftwood and a pocketknife as if by magic.
