Chapter Fifteen

Elsie

When I heard a knock on the door the following morning, the last thing I thought was that this knock was about to change my entire world.

As always, Rachel, our doorman opens, and I can immediately recognize who it is from the way Rachel greets her.

“Mrs. Medina!” Rachel cheers, as my mom opens her arms and welcomes her into a hug. That’s just my mom, a hugger. Rachel usually isn’t the one for hugs, but she can’t say no to my mom.

“Mom,” I walk up to them, allowing them a moment, when my mom releases Rachel from her grip and turns to me. “I wasn’t expecting you today.”

The very moment I look into her eyes, I know something’s wrong.

“Mom?” I ask immediately.

She swallows heavily, her lips parting, as if she’s finding it difficult to find the right words to say whatever she came here to say.

Rachel gets the hint instantly. “Why don’t I give you guys some privacy, so you can talk in peace?”

I’m stunned into silence, but my mom manages to thank her.

“Thank you, Rachel.” Her voice is soft, but there is an undertone of something ominous, something dark.

Rachel grabs her phone from the desk and heads out the door, stopping for a moment. “I’ll be over in Linda’s room, if you need me.”

I nod gratefully, then she closes the door behind her, leaving me and my mom alone. She walks over to me, taking me by the hand.

“Why don’t we sit down?” she suggests, and this is how I know that whatever she is about to tell me isn’t just bad, it’s downright frightful.

I do as she bids, and we both take a seat on my bed. She is still holding me by the hand. Hers is not warm and soft, as usual, but rather clammy and moist. She pats my hand with hers a little, and I can see how nervous she is, which is making me even more apprehensive.

“What is it, mom?” I urge her, although I’d rather just sit here in silence for the rest of the day. But I know we can’t do that. She has come to tell me something important, something that obviously couldn’t wait for next time when we arranged to meet.

She inhales deeply, looking at me straight in the eyes, her own mirroring mine. She is smiling, but it is a painful smile, hiding so much anguish it makes me want to cry. I blink the need to cry away, focusing on her beautiful face.

“I have something to tell you, my sweet girl,” she starts, her voice trembling and on the verge of breaking. “And when I do, I need you to be brave. Can you do that for me?”

The tone of her voice is angelic. It reminds me of the days when I was a little girl, and she would sing me to sleep. It was the sound of that voice that kept me safe through the night, through the worst of darkness, when I would open my eyes and I could only see shadows in my room.
