“Who did you burn?”

Thomas held the hammer and stood over the guard.

The basement’s light swirled with dust motes.

He was here: in the right place at the right time. With a guard, captive and bound, at his feet. With a weapon in his hand.

Thomas stared at the guard.

The guard replied, “I don’t understand.”

Thomas walked crouched beside him and spoke slowly. “When you and the other guards burned people alive in the camps. What made you kill the people you did?”

The man closed his eyes.

Thomas asked the question, knowing he wouldn’t be capable of repeating it. “Who did you choose to die?”

Then he watched the guard’s face: he was annoyed. Annoyed at the obviousness and impartiality of his answer. He was annoyed that he even had to explain.

The guard said, “Anyone. Whoever did what we told them to do.” And then: “It didn’t matter.”

Thomas stared at the man laying against the wall, the man who was looking up at him now. He repeated the phrase aloud, needing to make it leave his mouth in order to understand it: “It didn’t matter.”

The helpless man below Thomas flinched in anticipation—

Thomas stood up.

He dropped the hammer.

Thomas turned and walked up the stairs.
