CHAPTER 9: REVELATION

To Sevan, it appeared they were in a tunnel. Ahead, through an aperture, he could see an empty region of space. The walls of the tunnel appeared to comprise the same view but distorted into a series of rings that became more and more closely packed together, as if he was viewing the universe through a thick lens.

Within a few moments, the distorted light had resolved itself and the crew of the Mastery of the Stars gathered in front of the observation window to examine their new surroundings.

“We are definitely in a different segment,” said Ay-ttho.

“Yes, but where?” Tori agreed.

“Navigational plans are recalibrating,” said Ron. “This may take some time. However, I have detected an incoming craft. It appears to be the presidential cruiser.”

Ay-ttho, Tori, and Sevan exchanged quizzical glances.

Sure enough, the vast presidential cruiser slowly came into view.

“They are requesting we land on the cruiser,” said Ron.

“Well, we’d better do what they say then,” said Ay-ttho.

Surrounded by the vast emptiness of space, the Mastery of the Stars touched down on the hull of the enormous cruiser. A docking gate extended and secured itself to the exit of their ship.

“They are requesting you to go aboard,” said Ron.

“Of course they are.”

Ay-ttho, Tori, and Sevan descended through the docking gate into one of the vast corridors. A guard was waiting for them.

“Please follow me,” she said.

She led them into a large hall where President Hours, Allecram, and Nix were waiting for them.

“Well, well, well. So it worked.” President Hours exclaimed with delight.

“What worked?” asked Ay-ttho, sounding a little aggrieved.

“The experiment. It was a tremendous success and here you are to prove it. I’m relieved. I wouldn’t have wanted to come to this stretch of desolate space for nothing.”

“What are you talking about?” asked Tori, trying to not sound too rude but failing miserably.

“Why, my dear clone, you and your colleagues have just made history. The Republic has moved substantial matter through folding space without a portal before.”

“Well, technically, the process creates a temporary portal,” said Nix.

“Yes, yes. It’s all about making this region of space a bit more sticky that the other.”

“You mean to say that you just used us for an experiment?” asked Ay-ttho.

“Yes, isn’t it exciting?”

“And what if it hadn’t worked?”

“But it did.”

“But it might not have. What would we have done then?”

“Then I think we would have needed to get ourselves some more clones.”

“I think what President Hours is trying to say,” Allecram interrupted. “Is that you have proved to be an invaluable asset to the Republic and we value your work more than you might imagine. So much so that we would like to contract your services further. Obviously, you will be re-numerated very well.”

“How well?”

Allecram typed a figure into his communicator and showed it to Ay-ttho, whose antennae straightened slightly. Tori gave her an inquisitive glance, and she whispered something to him. His antennae straightened as well. Sevan offered them both inquisitive glances.

“Later,” said Ay-ttho.

Relaxing slightly, she turned back to Allecram.

“What is it you
