A short time later, David entered the Warnersâ front yard and gave the brass knob a quick pull.
âIs Helen at home?â he asked when Helenâs mother, Margaret, answered the door.
âSheâs in the parlor, practicing the piece sheâll be playing for church this Sunday,â the petite woman replied.
âMay I speak with her? Itâs of the utmost importance.â
Margaret hesitated a moment and finally motioned to the room on her left. âGo on in.â
David stepped into the parlor, where Helen sat in front of a spacious organ, pumping her feet as she played and sang, âSweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, that calls me from a world of care, and bids me at my Fatherâs throne, make all my wants and wishes known!â
When David moved closer to the organ, Helenâs head jerked, and she blinked several times, looking up at him like a frightened bird. âOh my! You startled me, David. IâI didnât know anyone had come in.â
âI need to speak to you. Your mother said that I could come in.â
âWhâwhat did you wish to speak with me about?â Helen seemed nervous, which was out of character for this usually calm, confident woman.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out Elizabethâs note. âI found this at the cabin.â
Helen dropped her gaze to the organ keys.
âItâs a note from Elizabeth.â
Still no comment.
Why is she acting so strange? She must know something, and I have to find out what it is.
âShe called off our wedding and has gone away,â he said.
âIâm very sorry, David.â
âDid you know about this?â he asked, taking a seat on the bench beside her.
She nodded slowly.
âWhere is she, Helen? What caused Elizabeth to change her mind about marrying me?â
Helenâs shoulders trembled as she lifted them in a brief shrug, refusing to make eye contact with him.
David placed his hand on her shoulder. âPlease tell me what you know. I canât bear the thought of losing Elizabeth. I love her so much, and until I found this note, I was sure she loved me, too.â
Helenâs chin quivered as tears gathered in the corners of her chestnut-colored eyes. âI know this is painful for you, David, but you must accept Elizabethâs decision and get on with your life.â
âGet on with my life?â He shook his head vigorously. âHow can I accept her decision when I donât understand the reason she called off the wedding?â
Helen said nothing.
Irritation welled in Davidâs soul. Helen was hiding something; he was sure of it. Was she trying to spare his feelings, or had she promised Elizabeth not to tell?
âIs there someone else?â he questioned. âIs Elizabeth in love with another man?â
âNo.â
âThen what is it? Why couldnât she look me in the eye and tell me that she doesnât love me anymore?â
Helen rose from the bench and moved over to the window. âI canât discuss this with you. I gave Elizabeth my word.â
âIf you wonât tell me why she wrote the note and left town, then at least tell me where sheâs gone,â he said, quickly joining her at the window.
