Chapter 20

Alex heard Rohan and Gaius’ voices, though they seemed at a great distance from where she sat next to them. The plane was gently rocking her, and Alex fought her deep fatigue so she did not fall asleep on the flight to Nassor’s Arabian estate. She pushed herself up from her seat and whispered that she would be back in a few minutes.

She made her way to the back of the plane to its bathroom and then its kitchen. After looking in the refrigerator and cabinets, Alex found a snack for herself and she sat atop the counter eating and drinking a bottle of water. She closed her eyes and briefly checked the shield she had in place around the four Airbuses, and then she searched for the four others that were leaving Europe, South Africa, and Australia to join them in Saudi Arabia.

“Whatcha doing back here?” Gaillard asked, and Alex opened her eyes to see him entering the kitchen.

“Just taking a moment,” she said, gently smiling at him as he made his way over to her side. Gaillard turned and leaned against the counter, settling one foot over the other and crossing his arms over his chest.

“I know,” he said softly and tenderly. “This is the most despicable plot I have seen from the children of the Fallen in over a millennia. And I am truly sorry, Alex, that it seems to never be at an end for you and Gaius right now.” Gaillard looked down at her and his eyes roamed over Alex’s face as he drew in a deep breath.

“You know, Rohan’s words hit the mark there, after Gaius ended Dennan. These demented creatures will look for any weakness, and they will zero in on it. I’m sure, to them, you and Gaius look like an easy mark, because they think they can compare what was, with what is. But they don’t know what is, Alex, and you have to keep telling yourself that.”

“They have no notion of selfless and tireless love. They’ve never experienced it, and their fathers have made sure they never remained with their human mothers long enough to understand it. So whatever words and filth they spew at you and your husband, take it as just that. Hold to Gaius, and know that we will all be there to help you both weather this storm,” he pledged, reaching out and wrapping an arm around her shoulders. Gaillard hugged her gently and laid his head over against hers.

“Thank you, Gaillard,” she said, smiling over her brethren’s constant love and care. “Let me ask you a question.”

“Go for it. What do you want to know?” he asked, still holding her against his side.

“Do Anot and Keres have any weaknesses that you know of?” Alex asked, and he lifted his head from hers to look at her again.

“That’s an important question, isn’t it?” Gaillard said, watching her eyes closely.

“Very,” she simply said, awaiting his words.

“Well,” he said, exhaling loudly as he chose his next words, “Keres is a little over seven hundred years older than Gaius.
