Together, they began to make moderate leaps spanning between a quarter to a half of a kilometer, adjusting to the landscape as they progressed. There was still much wooded and mountainous terrain for them to cross before they made it to the more developed and populated areas of Germany. And though the silence in the forest was slightly unnerving to Alex, she was grateful for the natural cover and the lack of mortals nearby. Her biggest fear was that an innocent bystander would be grabbed along the trek and she would be forced to give herself up in order to save them.

Though the morning hours were upon them, the day proved overcast with heavy clouds that promised snow on the late November day. And with an elusive sun, the temperature did not climb above 7ºC as they made their way. Alex was grateful that they had thick jackets, gloves, and scarves to help insulate them along with their auras. It was enough to warm them, though she detested dragging the frigid air into her lungs.

Gaius led them slightly south so they could continue to use the existing strips of woodland near the small towns and villages along their route. At times, they would leave the ground and bound well over a kilometer, trying to avoid houses or businesses that lay in their path. Any means by which they might protect mortals, Alex and Gaius seized.

After traveling over fifty kilometers, Gaius stopped their movement. They were on the eastern edge of Guttenberger Wald, another dense and pristine section of forest that Alex marveled over. The town of Reichenberg could be seen just beyond the trees, trees that looked so old and so like those at Aeoferth to her. Light snow had begun to fall, and Alex paused to catch a few snowflakes on her tongue while Gaius consulted her phone’s map.

“Are you hungry?” he chuckled into her mind.

“Yes,” she responded with a smile. “But I’m just playing right now.”

Gaius stared down at her with such a tender look that Alex felt her smile grow. She looked on as his eyes roamed over her face, and she gave him a slow wink before she tilted her head back to catch a few more. She felt Gaius’ hand touch the back of her head momentarily, but Alex continued to delight in such a simple thing as snowflakes settling on her tongue before they moved on again.
