Myths morph into facts

Until the Five Emperors period, rulers followed a system of abdication and nomination of leadership. Yu the Great was said to be the last of such leaders. Around 2070 BC, Yu founded the first dynasty of China: Xia. He was succeeded by his son, Qi, who subsequently overthrew the republican mode of abdication and nomination in favour of the hereditary state system that was to stay in place for the next 3,900 years. Due to Yu’s own mythical status and the absence of contemporary written evidence, however, the Xia dynasty’s existence is still contested. What is certain is that Chinese civilisation continued its forward march during the period covered by the Xia dynasty (c.2070–c.1600 BC), which encompassed the early Bronze Age and left us a wealth of bronze wine vessels.
