Toten took a seat at his favorite steak house, a fresh bandage on his back. Clouds of steam billowed from the kitchen, and the place smelled wonderful. He felt cold and his hands still shook.

The clock-ring was nestled in his vest pocket where he’d shoved it when he returned, and the knife was wrapped in a newspaper at his hip. His coat was lost, still draped over the railing of the porch back at that house, so he was underdressed for the room. If he’d calculated correctly when turning the hour gear, he had taken himself back to just after his original theft.

A waiter with a red pocket handkerchief in his breast pocket brought steak and a potato, and Toten began sawing at the steak, waiting. The sudden shift in atmosphere announced that Nekravé had arrived. He looked up as the dark robed figure pulled out the empty chair at his table, noting the slight hesitation of her copper and bronze parts.

“You’ve taken something important from me and made me cross this whole forsaken city chasing you,” Nekravé said in her fake, sepulchral accent, just like before.
