CHAPTER TEN
THINGS WERE DEFINITELY coming along.
The walls were painted.
The counters were in.
The floor was finished.
Three days later, Gia stood in the center of the spacious kitchen and turned around. They still had a lot of details to work on, like the backsplash, the fixtures and the cabinet pulls. Things that would make this house a home. Lucky for them, the leaking pipe had been caught before it caused any major damage.
A smiled lifted her lips. This place had an old-world feel but with all the modern conveniences. Though the long center island did give the room a more modern vibe, sheâd weighed need over authenticity. But theyâd made sure the island matched the look and feel of the cabinetry. All in all, anyone would be lucky to have this kitchen. Sheâd certainly feel that way if it were hers.
She couldnât help but wonder if Ric would change his mind about the place and move in once it was completed. After all, heâd grown up here. It was a part of his pastâ
âThere you are.â The sound of Ricâs voice came from behind her.
She turned to him. âYou were looking for me?â
âIâve been calling you and texting you. Didnât you get my messages?â
âSorry. My phone is in the other room.â She couldnât help but worry that something was wrong. It wasnât usual for Ric to track her down in person. âIs something wrong with Gin?â
âNo.â He shook his head. âHeâs fine. Heâs at home with Mrs. Rossi.â
âThen whatâs wrong?â
âNothing is wrong. Not exactly.â
âYou arenât making any sense.â And her anxiety was climbing with each passing moment.
âItâs about your fatherâyour biological father. Nate calledââ
âHe figured it out?â Excitement flooded her veins. âHe knows the manâs name?â
âNo. Iâm sorry. He wasnât able to uncover any additional information from the pages we scanned to him. But he has an idea that might lead to more information about him. However, itâs going to take your agreement.â
âWhat is it?â She was getting desperate. She couldnât stop now. She felt as though they were very close to finding out his name.
âNate needs the actual journal to run some tests on. He might need to remove a page or two.â
For the briefest moment, Gia hesitated. She worried her bottom lip. It was her motherâs final words. If anything happened to it, sheâd be miserable. But her siblings had given their blessings for her to do with the journal what was necessary to locate her biological father. Maybe the risk was worth it.
âOkay. Do it,â she said in a rushed breath before she could take it back.
Ric arched a brow. âI know how protective you are of your motherâs journal. Are you sure? I donât know exactly what heâs going to do with it.â
âIâm sure.â She wasnât. Not really. But her mother used to say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. âItâs back at your place.â
âCan you leave now? Nate has some time this afternoon.â
âI...uh, yes. Just let me have a word with the contractor.â
âIâll meet you at the car.â
âSounds like a plan.
