Àre you all right?'

`No, not really. I think I might be dying. Not sure if I can regenerate...

not without assistance, anyway...'

Poor fellow, thought Grainger. He's rambling...

`Still, good thing I was here, eh?' He gestured toward the police box.

`The old girl and I were lost in the vortex. If she hadn't got herself caught

up in the dimensional fissure opened up by the Logos, well...' He rubbed

the back of his neck thoughtfully. `No telling what might have happened.'

Suddenly he stood up, wobbling slightly. Grainger steadied him.

`Well, better be getting back to Sarah Jane and the Brigadier, I suppose.

If I make it...'

`Bou need medical attention. I'll call...'

`No.' The voice was suddenly firm. 'Thank you, but there's no point. I

don't think your doctors would know where to begin.'

He patted Grainger on the shoulder and walked, falteringly, over to the

police box, producing a key from his jacket.

Òne question...' said Grainger. The old man turned.

`That symbol you used to stop all of this...'

Òh, yes. Handy little thing One of the few fragments of the Logos to

have survived intact, and retained its power, into modern Earth

languages.'

He plucked a torn sheet of paper from the floor, and, with a stub of

pencil, quickly scrawled something on it. 'Incorporate this into any

enclosed belief-system, and it collapses. If you're helping to remake that

world out there, you might find it comes in handy.'

He gave the paper to Grainger, then turned, opened the police box, and

stepped inside. Well, thought Grainger, at least he's not going anywhere.

He left the library and bumped into Munro and the others in the

corridor outside.

Ì know you said not to come in, sir, but... the house is back to normal!

What happened? Did you find...'

Ì'll explain everything some other time, Sergeant. Right now, I want

you to summon a medic and —'

A sound halfway between the groan of ancient machinery and the

wheeze of an asthmatic walrus rent the air. Munro swore, and the soldiers

readied their rifles again.

Grainger rushed back into the library, just as the sound faded. The

police box and its occupant were gone.

`Sir? What was that?'

Grainger shook his head. 'Forget it, Sergeant. We've got other things to

think about.' He smiled. 'Like remaking a world.'

As the baffled troopers filed out, Grainger looked at the piece of paper

in his hand. The smile broadened. He folded the paper up and put it into

his pocket. Handy little thing, indeed.

It had looked very much like a question mark.

... quantum mechanics governs the behaviour of transistors

and integrated circuits, which are essential components of

electronic devices such as televisions and computers. It is

also the basis of modern chemistry and biology... I think

computer viruses should count as life.

A swift set of equations translated into synaptic data. Messages reached their terminals and relayed information to the corresponding limb. The organism reached out and made contact with the reflective surface.

The perceived image was two-dimensional and reversed. Light reflected sense data, which was interpreted back within the cortex and welcomed with a surge of heightened activity.
