We got out of the car when we reached the road barrier. It was below room temperature there, and while we could still smell the fire, there was no visible smoke in the air. I was afraid there would be guards, either protecting this place or seeking shelter in it, and thus told everyone to be ready. The lamps hanging from the ceiling in the garage flickered. We proceeded toward the elevator with extreme caution, but after stepping out of it on the floor above, we soon discovered that the entire section had been abandoned.

“This is where they kept me,” I said as we entered the empty hallways inside the facility. “I was a prisoner here for months. I have to admit, it doesn’t feel great to be back here.”

I stopped outside my old detention cell and looked in through the observation window. The memories coming back to me were vivid. I could almost see myself lying on the hard bed, malnourished and without hope of rescue. Even though we hadn’t accomplished anything significant yet, standing on the other side of this window gave me a sense of victory. Although this place had been deserted before we got here, it still felt as if I had come back a conqueror, and it inspired a sensation of pride at the core of my being.

I showed her the examination room. It was messy, as if someone had searched for something in a hurry, and although a lot of the glass instruments lay shattered on the white concrete floor, most of the equipment was still there. Larissa asked me to help her instruct the Neanderthals to sit down on the examination table. As I did that, I took the time to ask the soldier for his name. He looked at the floor, then quickly up again and met my eyes.

“Koxa,” he said with a deep voice.

Jacob sat down in front of the desk and picked up a half-smoked cigar.

“Are these any good?” he said and smelled it. “It has quite the unusual aroma for a cigar, I would say… very sweet, not so heavy.”

Larissa used whatever she could find to examine the Neanderthals, such as a stethoscope, specialized swabs, and some kind of viewing device she used as an otoscope. She used her own body—for example, by opening her mouth—to instruct the Neanderthals.

“Don’t put that cigar in your mouth,” I said and nodded toward the Neanderthals. “You don’t want to catch whatever they have.”

Jacob put it away, sighed, and looked at me. “I have to be honest here,” he said with a stern face. “This has turned into a mess. We have to take a step back and think for a while. We were just going to do some scouting for crying out loud, and now we’re sitting deep
