Grooming Techniques

Methods and approaches vary for longhaired and shorthaired cats.

For Longhairs

Many longhaired breeds require 15 to 30 minutes of daily attention. Otherwise, they develop painful mats in their coats. (See “Removing Mats,”.)

[1] Use the wide-tooth side of a double-sided comb to clear tangles. Once this is accomplished, switch to the fine-tooth comb and repeat.

[2] Use a wire brush to remove dead hair. The feline’s posterior quadrant will yield the most abundant supply.
