Chapter Five
Huey slowly turned around to see a raven-haired woman in a black leather overcoat. As she started to undo the belt on the garment, she revealed more cleavage. The clown held up his hand.
“Don’t go any further! I’ve given up on toxic dames.”
The woman rolled her eyes and undid more of the coat. Under the coat she wore a black pinstripe pant suit with a silver flower pin in one of the lapels. She buttoned up her shirt.
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
Huey stared at the woman and brightened up when he recognized who she was.
“I saw you the other day at Barky’s.”
The woman shook her head.
“Yeah, you were there…you were one of the broads groping Knuckleford.”
The woman wagged her finger in Huey’s face.
“I’m not one to be trifled with, Mista Dusk.”
Huey smiled, got up and poured himself a drink, downing it in one gulp.
“Then why are you here?”
The woman ambled over and sat on the couch.
“And why can’t you at least knock before entering my apartment?”
The woman laughed and pulled out a long cigarette in a holder. She lit up and blew perfectly round smoke rings toward the ceiling.
Huey sat back in his chair. Big-time trouble seeped from every one of this beautiful lady’s pores. It was the kind of trouble that dropped a guy to the floor in convulsions after taking a sip of something strong and clear. He also didn’t like the fact that she was lying to him about the restaurant. But beyond that, all he could do was to go along with her and see what she was about.
“Look, honey, why don’t you tell me your name.”
“I’m Prima Spaznakova.”
The woman’s eyes sparkled as she looked at the cupboard that housed the liquor. Huey followed her gaze and smiled.
“Like one of those?”
Prima looked at Huey and winked.
“A drink?” Huey asked again.
The woman nodded and winked again. Huey got up and poured her a drink. He walked over and handed it to her.
“So again, whadda you want?”
“I’m here to protect you,” Prima said and winked once more.
Huey shook his head in disgust. He’d been down this road before and he didn’t like it.
“Langley?”
Prima took a sip of her drink and said, “I represent a private consortium of businesses that have a vested interest in seeing the remaining pockets of the Bulbicov organization eliminated.”
The clown fumed when she mentioned the name of his old nemesis.
“I killed that clown years ago. What does he have to do with anything?”
Prima chuckled and winked, then stubbed her cigarette in her drink and set it down on the end table.
“You only, shall we say, cut off the tail of the snake.”
Dusk pounded his fist on the chair’s armrest. He was tired of this woman and her riddles. He walked over to her and grabbed her lapel. Prima looked down at Huey’s hand.
“You don’t want to do that,” she said.
Dusk pulled her forward.
“Start talking or I toss you through that window, despite the fact that you’re a lady.”
Prima sighed and rolled her eyes. She grabbed his wrist and twisted it around, causing him to go down on his knees.
