CHAPTER TEN

CHARLES HAD BEEN SITTING ON THE PATIO WITH CLYDE having a cup of coffee when the phone rang. He motioned for Clyde to follow him inside and took Matthew’s phone call in the library, where he could hear him better. Clyde settled in an armchair and flipped through a magazine.

“Clyde’s here with me,” Charles said. “You remember my buddy Clyde, the one who originally taught me the four truths?”

“Of course,” Matthew said. “You can put me on the speakerphone if you want.”

“Yes, if you don’t mind?” Charles said.

“You said Clyde helped you in the past, and I certainly need all the help I can get,” Matthew said.

Charles pressed the speakerphone button on his desktop phone.

“Can you hear us?” Charles asked.

“Yes,” Matthew replied. “Hello, Clyde.”

“Hi, there,” Clyde replied and set the magazine back on the table.

“So what are you guys up to?” Matthew asked.

“When we’re not playing golf, we’re talking golf,” Clyde said. “We’re organizing a charity fund-raiser for the youth group at our church. Do you play, Matthew?”

“Not really,” Matthew said. “It’s too sedate for me. But I’ll be happy to help cook hamburgers or whatever you do at fund-raisers.”

“Fantastic. You’re in,” Clyde said.

“Matthew wants to tell us about something,” Charles explained to Clyde. “He said he needs some help, which, if I may say so, is very good to hear.”

“What’s good to hear?” Clyde chided. “That he needs help?”

“No!” Charles said. “I didn’t mean it that way. I mean it’s very good to hear that Matthew thinks of calling me, that he thinks I might help. It’s good.”

“Thanks,” Matthew said, “I appreciate that you take the time to hear all my whining. Let me tell you about my wonderful morning.”

Matthew related word by word the phone call from the reporter, and how someone had eavesdropped and reported the private conversation between Matthew and Charles.

“That’s a fairly bad morning,” said Clyde. “I’ll have to agree with you there.”

Charles was silent for a moment.

“Do you have any idea who overheard our conversation?” Charles asked. “Did Brighton give any clues?”

“He wouldn’t say anything,” Matthew said. “He protects his sources. But I have a pretty firm idea of the culprit.”

Leaning slightly forward with both hands gripping the handset, Charles waited.

“It’s got to be Yannik,” Charles said, “the little snitch.”

“Wow,” Matthew said, “I think the same, but I wouldn’t have guessed that you’d agree with me.”

“Who else?” Charles asked. “He was downstairs all the time when we were talking in the bookstore. Little snoop.”

“I thought you liked Yannik,” Matthew said with surprise.

“Never trusted him,” Charles said. “He’s the kind of guy who always says what he thinks you want to hear. Too smooth for me. I’d rather have a bit of a rough word or two with a guy, where at least I know where I stand. Like with you. We’ve been through a few bumps, but you’re a man I can talk to.”

“I appreciate that,” Matthew said.

“Matthew?” Clyde asked. “Did you say Brighton mentioned Seven Seas?”

“He just said that some people have
